Fri Mar 14 1000 GMT Vance Stevens streams Hangout Happening live from TESOL Arabia Dubai, entitled Extending Google+ Hangouts to way beyond 10 participants

At the conference I intend to set up a Hangout live and invite conference participants to join it. Of course anyone in our online PLN is welcome to join us as well.

———————————————————————–

The live stream was set up shortly before the presentation and remained reasonably robust throughout the event. This was proposed as a workshop to be held in a computer lab setting, starting at 1000 GMT (2pm in Dubai), but most attendees had mobile devices, so biggest challenge was getting them to mute and use earphones, to keep down echo.

As it turned out, we had one participant from online (thanks to Marijana from Croatia!!, who started in the Etherpad chat and then joined us in the hangout). We also had one participant make it into the Hangout from the live audience. However, although many were able to reach the pages where the event was being streamed, the Etherpad chat was too tiny for some smartphone screens, and YouTube was possibly blocked, as at least one user explained that he received a message denying access.

Still, enough happened that we were able demonstrate the process and I think in the end, people seemed to be understanding how the pieces fit together and why, and another was found exploring my slide show and said it seemed quite clear.  So I am happy with the outcome from my expenditure of effort.

HERE IS WHAT WILL BE DEMONSTRATED

On Sun Mar 9 Vance Stevens hosted another session on iPads in language learning

Here is its Google+ event page:

The event was streamed with a Chatwing text chat available to listeners in real time at http://webheadsinaction.org/live

What did we talk about?

Following on our conversation last Sunday
https://learning2gether.net/2014/03/02/learning2gether-on-ipad-sunday-march-2-and-the-annual-slanguages-conference-feb-28-march-1/

This Sunday, we gave iPads a little more thought.  Where I work we’re just now in a position of giving out iPads and having to manage their use into something productive to learning at some point in the very near future.  That is, we’ll give the iPads out, have the students set them up and download a set of apps, and then get them producing something relating to the curriculum (geared to having them succeed in IELTS listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar).

Last week we found that the topic was of interest to several colleagues so this week I tried to bring a little more research to the table than what I had on hand at our last meeting. I prepared by compiling what I have learned about iPads into something practical and useful. I’m blogging what I’m coming up with here, please add your comments: http://toolkit4learning.blogspot.ae/2014/03/the-ipads-are-coming-preparation.html

This post is written from the point of view of an educator preparing to enter the realm of iPads with students for the first time.  This is basically a list of apps we have identified as being useful and a catalog of articles written by educators who have been through the experience.  The amount of such material is exhaustive, so the pearls that can be used when needed in class are difficult to find. Ahmed asked at the end of our chat if we had anything on how the apps we had mentioned could be used in class contexts. He was aware of initiatives in the UAE, both with HCT, under whose umbrella I work and UAE University in Al Ain where I live, where iPads are conceived as replacing use of paper.  In my particular context we have been working just outside these initiatives (our students have had laptops so far) and discovering what Ahmed asked about is exactly the point of our discussions.  In holding them, we are finding others in similar positions. We are hoping to share with others at our stage in using iPads, both to learn from them, and soon to help by opening to them what we learn from our experience.

Here are some show notes gleaned from today’s discussion:

I forget to capture the text chat with its links but Rita was able to recall what she had placed there while it was fresh on her mind:

Sun Mar 2 1400 GMT Vance Stevens hosts The iPads are coming! HELP! They’re here!

Vance Stevens and colleagues met at Bb Collaborate / Elluminate at 1600 GMT Sunday March 2, 2014: http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/

Recording:

The topic is: “The iPads are coming! The iPads are coming! HELP! They’re here!”

I teach in a military college and as they do here, we were told in our last hour of the working day before the weekend that we should expect our students to be given iPads on Sunday (first day of our teaching week). These will be iPads out of the box. We’ll have to start by getting the students onto the app store (we have ensured that each has an email address). We also have lists of recommended apps, and I imagine we’ll start them downloading those.

We’ve been doing a lot of training on iPad use in which we’ve been shown a lot of apps, but there has been nothing on how it will work to bring students up to using those apps. Given this situation, what would you start them off on to do something productive for language learning on day one that would be dead simple to implement?  I have my ideas but none are tested at the moment. By 1600 GMT Sunday March 3, they will have been.

I would love to share my first day experience with this situation and discuss this with colleagues wishing to share their insights gained through their own experiences.

Mon Feb 24 Assessment Strategies for Effective Badge Systems

Presented by Anne Derryberry, Sage Road Solutions

Before a badge is awarded, issuers must verify that a badge seeker has acquired the skills and/or competencies that the badge represents. That verification happens through evidence-based assessment. In other words, not assessment based on a learner’s ability to recall information about how to do something – actual evidence that demonstrates the learner can do that thing. During this session, we will look at various strategies for assessment that generate evidence of competency or skill mastery. Anne Derryberry will lead the session, and will be joined by Joanna Normoyle (UC Davis’ Agricultural Sustainability Institute) and Phillip Ash (CyraCom), each of whom will present the learning program, badge system, and assessment strategies they are designing.

On Tue Feb 11 Vance Stevens presented at a MultiMOOC and ICT4ELT EVO sessions joint event – Once a Webhead always a Webhead

This was an Electronic Village Online event for Week 5 (Focus) in MultiMOOC EVO session, held jointly with ICT4ELT

Slides http://www.slideshare.net/vances/once-upon-awebhead

In preparation for the event, you can read over the draft book chapter here: http://tinyurl.com/small2014

It explains connections between Webheads in Action, WiAOC, Learning2gether, EVO, Becoming a Webhead, and MultiMOOC

Becoming a Webhead is not offered as an EVO session for the first time in ten years, but its moderators have created an alternative EVO session to follow on the collaborative spirit of BaW – ICT4ELT at http://ict4elt2014.pbworks.com. Now that BaW is no longer being offered, its moderators think it important to introduce ICT4ELT participants to the Webheads <http://www.webheads.info>, so they have invited Vance Stevens to join them in a live session in Week 5. This would be also an opportunity for ICT4ELT to get to know Learning2gether, at which, says Jose Antonio Da Silva, “there is always someone presenting something very interesting every weekend.” (Thanks, Jose 🙂

Here is a summary of what ICT4ELT will be covering in EVO Week 5 (Jan 10 – 16, 2014)

  • Cooperating online & wrap-up.
  • Revisiting Twitter, wikis, blogs, google docs (one platform of participants’ choice)
  • International project work with other participants of the course, possible school projects for the future
  • Finding out about the Webheads community as a PLN – the possibility of joining the Webheads

Learning2gether with Prof. dr. Jozef Colpaert discussing 12 CALL Challenges

Learning2gether Episode 201

On Sun Feb 9 Jozef Colpaert discussed 12 CALL Challenges as an Electronic Village Online event for Week 4 (Clustering) in MultiMOOC EVO session and as a Connecting Online 14 conference event (CO14)

What was this about?

Where? WizIQ

Announcements

Our discussion stems from Dr. Colpaert’s presentation at WorldCALL in Glasgow, July 2013

The 12 challenges Jozef Colpaert recently identified and presented at WorldCALL 2013 in Glasgow are classified into three categories:

  1. contextual (academic meritocracy, academic value of CALL, myths/hypes and broad-public perception),
  2. methodological (design, replication, slow research and transdisciplinarity), and
  3. epistemological (open, psychological, smart and sustainable aspects)

As per http://www.linkedin.com/in/colpaert

A personal learning framework
http://www.wiziq.com/online-class/1553512-co14-a-personal-learning-framework-with-stephen-downes

As we evolved into the next generation of MOOCs, it will become increasingly important to be able to manage our personal learning activities ourselves, rather than to depend on a particular institution. In this presentation, Stephen Downes outlines and defends this proposition, showing how personal learning support will benefit people from school through formal education through to the workplace.

Sun Feb 9 Dr Revathy Viswanathan at CO14
Dr Revathy Viswanathan kicked off CO14 for Sunday Feb 9 noon GMT with a talk entitled
“Scope for Teacher Development in Digital Era”
http://www.wiziq.com/online-class/1571182-co14-scope-for-teacher-development-in-digital-era

Teachers in this digital era have varied teaching experiences in their classrooms. Every session is challenging and educative to both teachers and that is facilitated more by advanced technologies. With the growing trend of using emerging technologies, it has become essential for teachers to update their knowledge of integrating technology in a traditional classroom. It must be stated that universities have to pave way for augmenting the use of new technologies in a classroom by revamping curriculum periodically. In that way it provides opportunity for teachers to develop their teaching and professional skills besides providing exposure to new technological tools to students. In this presentation, the presenter would share her experience of using Wiki and Blogs with her students in teaching written communication. She would further highlight the way those tools had helped her to design materials for learning and also created opportunities for encouraging students to work in online platforms.

Hello Little World, Feb 24

Is MOOCs making us stupid?

Here’s the teaser

And now the hangout

It resonates with me where Keith talks about his disorientation since the first MOOC he attended, where he had to figure out how to do it better next time. He concludes, “Almost anything you pick in a MOOC will work for you … One of the things I learned to give up very quickly was trying to get it all.  I’m not going to.”

At 25:01 Dave says, “I wonder if that binding that you’re talking about when we look at … one of the first criticisms that people have of the Internet, of Twitter, of MOOCs,  abundant things generally … and I see certainly the potential of rhizomatic learning totally bundled with abundance … I wonder if the shaping that normally happens in curriculum is about creating certainty through scarcity — so that we say that these are the things that we’re going to learn, and then as learners we’ve gotten accustomed to not missing anything, being getting all the curriculum because we were supposed to get it all, and whether or not that’s one of the sort of underlying  constructs of the paper based world that needs to be opened up for people to be able to learn and think rhizomatically.”

This is a really cool hangout. Prior to this Dave had been experimenting with creating breakout rooms during the hangouts, creating gaps on the audio that could easily be removed, but some odd moments on the YouTube videos where he would be puttering about his house and visibly (but not audibly) engaging in the breakouts.  Also, the previous recordings came off as monologues, at odds with his so-inclusive Worldbridges endeavors, whereas this one he has invited others into the hangout, admitting voices of  others in the MOOC, and thereby embracing uncertainty while pulling off another totally extemporaneous event that models what it intends to get across, that certainty is an attempt to control proceedings by falling back on scarcity; uncertainty in turn embraces abundance.

(Note, the audio has gaps removed where silence occurred in the hangout, because the video being played was not recorded on YouTube; we may try to repair this in time)

On Tue Jan 28 we met with Karen Price who demonstrated some of her work on Perceptual computing in MOOC interaction and assessment. This was presented as an Electronic Village Online event for Week 3 (Networking) in MultiMOOC EVO session

Where? Google Hangout

A problem with this video, explained by Karen …

Since the frame rate for videos when sharing from pptx in Hangout is pretty poor, opting to show videos via the YouTube app in Google hangout allows users to see videos with normal FPS. However, the moderator must “share” his/her screen /YouTube app for the videos to be captured. Otherwise, only the screenshare (i.e. avatars and pptx) is captured and the videos (which the moderator and Google Hangout members would have seen) are not there. So, anyone who didn’t view the videos at that time via the YouTube app won’t have seen them and won’t have them in their YouTube channel. That’s why I was recommending “annotations” with the archived hangout to enable viewers to see the explanatory videos.

Thinking caps on!

Karen’s presentation at the  at the 2013 WorldCALL conference in Glasgow

Karen Price presented a 30 min Research and Development paper on 11th July at the 2013 WorldCALL conference in Glasgow, Scotland, entitled Multimodal interfaces: blending gaze, gesture, movement and speech to overcome the limitations of keyboard, mouse & touchscreen. This session expanded on the lines of this presentation with many video examples brought into the Hangout.

Abstract

Human-to-human communication depends upon and integrates gaze, gesture, movement and speech. However, most user interfaces for language learning consist of keyboards, mice or touchscreen interfaces. These click-and-type / touch interfaces exclude many hints and signals, explicit or implicit, which are integral to language interactions. In contrast, multimodal interfaces process two or more combined user input modes such as speech, pen, touch, hand gestures, gaze, head and body movements in a coordinated manner with multimedia system output. For example, the processing of user-generated speech and non-speech sounds, in parallel with the user’s gaze, can generate appropriate listening behavior for a conversational virtual agent, triggering backchannel signals according to the user’s visual and acoustic behavior. (Bevacqua, et al, 2012) The presenter argues that multimodal interfaces do not simply offer the option of using a different mode or channel of communication (e.g. speaking vs clicking a button vs writing), but that their use enables the cross-modal synchronization of timing and meaning that is evident in human-human communication. Additionally, studies document significant improvement in the recognition of speech from accented L2 speakers when multimodal input is processed simultaneously. (Oviatt, 2008) Motion-sensing and gesture detection eliminate controllers and remotes, enabling users to interact with computer monitors, video, games, and music through physical gestures. As TV characters speak, children can participate in on-screen activities by responding and interacting in intuitive, physical ways by jumping, moving forwards or backwards, catching and throwing balls. Moreover, user-specific feedback and error correction can be offered to users in two-way conversations by onscreen characters in response physical and spoken responses to questions and suggestions. This paper reviews the capabilities of a variety of multimodal interfaces and gives participants a glimpse of intriguing commercial and academic applications as well as selected, relevant research in applied linguistics, gaming, and the behavioral sciences.

Monday, Jan. 27, 2-3:00 ET: Badges and Competency-based Learning – In the Open Badges MOOC session on “Learning Providers” last fall, Richard Culatta, Director of the Office of Educational Technology in the U.S. Department of Education commented that “it’s really about competency-based learning… and badges are a nice way to get there.” Competency-based learning provides a framework for defining learning objectives and shifting the focus to mastery of these objectives rather than “seat time.” Badges provide clear ways of verifying learning, with portable, transparent evidence of mastery. This session will demonstrate how badges are a logical and highly motivational component in competency-based learning.

Sun Jan 26 – MultiMOOC and YLTSIG EVO sessions joint event

Presented as an Electronic Village Online event for Week 2 (Declaration) in MultiMOOC EVO session as well as a Teaching English to Young Learners and Teenagers YLTSIG EVO event entitled “Chaos in Learning and How to Engage Learners in Resolving That Chaos Through Networking With One Another”

More information here:

What:

This is a joint event with Vance Stevens talking about the EVO MultiMOOC session at
http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com.
The discussion is aimed primarily at young learners, and at all learners by extrapolation.

MultiMOOC is about chaos in learning and how to engage learners in resolving that chaos through networking with one another. This presentation introduces a connectivist take on chaos in learning, with its suggestion that sense-making can be enhanced through a network of learners. Taking the Cynefin distinction of simple, complicated, complex, and chaotic problems, MOOCs seem directed at the latter two. We look at some examples of how learning occurs in MOOCs and wind up with some implications for the future.

Tue Jan 21 Personalize Learning

Personlize Learning Webinar #3: The Motivation Equation with Kathleen Cushman, Teachers perceive a crisis of motivation among their students, even more troubling with respect to the knowledge, skills, and habits that crucially affect the futures of low-income youth. But the science of learning suggests a powerful positive approach, which builds on what youth most value and supports their expectation of success. This webinar helps participants analyze their own student-motivation dilemmas, using the research-based “Motivation Equation” protocol and calling on classroom examples from WKCD’s new multimedia book of the same name by Kathleen Cushman. Join the Collaborate session here.
