On Sunday Nov 30 Learning2gether was privileged to meet with Maha Abdulmoneim, Maria Colussa and her colleagues at Hello Little World to discuss – The Magic of Networks

What is this about?

The Magic of Networks with Maha Abdelmoneim, Maria Colussa, and others from Hello Little World

In our last Learning2gether event on Sunday Nov 23, Ali Bostangioglu presented a comprehensive set of demographics based on his research into the Webheads CoP. There was some discussion of who was a Webhead. For the purpose of Ali’s study, Webheads are members of either the Yahoo Group (about 1050 registered email addresses), the Facebook group (about 100), or the Webheadsinaction Google+ Community (135).  The point was made that the community likely extends to a wider network, though for Ali’s purposes, this is not quantifiable.

However, we had one participant there, Sebastian from Kerala, who mentioned in text chat that he was in the Hello Little World network. I recognized that this was the community that Maria Colussa identifies with in her Skype byline, and I asked Sebastian if he knew her. Indeed he did, and then I recalled that I have Maria in my circles as one of the Multiliteracies group, not Webheads. The point was being made through example that people like Maria and Sebastian, (and Maha Abdelmoneim another participant in online spaces such as I have a Question and in various MOOCs where Maria and I meet occasionally, and whom we invited to join us in our recent GEC presentation) might not identify themselves as Webheads but can be found actively interacting with us nevertheless in our wider networks.

This HoA seeks to gather colleagues from the wider network to meet with us and try to characterize something of the magic inherent in these wider networks.

In this gathering, Ali reported on his initial findings from the interview data collected via questionnaire and interviews from all Webheads who opted to participate. Ali divided participants into 3 groups; lurkers, active members, and core members based on the amount of messages posted within the WiA Yahoo group. There were 11 lurkers, 9 active members, and 4 core members who participated in the interviews, and findings were discussed with regards to the perspectives of lurkers, active members, and core members.

All were invited to join and participate in the discussion of the results.  Those present included Michael Coghlan, Teresa Almeida d’Eca, Jose Antonio da Silva, Rita Zeinstejer, Sebastian from Kerala, and Halima Ozimova.

This was meant as an informal discussion of the present state of Ali’s data analysis, where Ali would entertain feedback on the direction of his study and seek clarification of some details. We hope that he will present his more definitive findings in a follow-on report later.

Discussion

Ali presented a very interesting set of demographics on the Webheads CoP. There was some discussion of who exactly (or at least quantifiably) was a Webhead.

I reiterated something that I have often said, being a Webheads is like being a hippy, they don’t carry ID cards, but if you are one, you know another one when you meet one. This is echoed at the bottom of http://webheads.info, in a tweet by Cristina Costa:

Real English is a long-time passion of Mike Marzio (that and cruising the riviera on his motorbike). Mike has become well known in language learning circles for videoing street language and developing lessons around the conversations and making those available free at his website http://www.real-english.com/. Mon Nov 10 A Look at Policy Matters that Affect Open Badges

A healthy Open Badges ecosystem exists within the context of policy and regulation at many levels. In this session, we will explore two policy questions:

  • What are the policy considerations at the institutional level?
  • What policies are under consideration – or should be – at the federal level in the U.S.?

Anne Derryberry will put forth the community-developed framework for developing institutional policies which she participated in authoring. Mary Alice McCarthy, Senior Policy Analyst in the Education Policy Program at New America, will present a number of policy discussions occurring at the U.S. federal level.

Sunday Nov  9 was the end of week 3 of EVO Moderator training, and part of that week’s training was on raising awareness of the potential of badges. Learning2gether invited Hope Kandel to come talk to the group on Credly, LearningTimes’s entry into the range of badge ecosystem options. We also took the opportunity to thank Hope, and the LearningTimes team, for extended use of the Bb\Collaborate Elluminate room which they have provided us free of charge for the past decade. We appreciate their support, and were very interested to learn how we could use Credly and badges in general.

Learning2gether Episode 243

https://learning2getherdotnet.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/learning2gether-with-quim-sabric3a0-edpuzzle-7giuuymakce.mp3?

On Sunday Nov 2 we had the great pleasure of meeting with Quim Sabrià, one of four developers of EdPuzzle, a unique online software tool for cropping video and developing lessons around that video segment, embedding it online, assigning it to a class, and tracking student analytics via the http://edpuzzle.com. Quim convinced us that this was a tool designed for teachers like him (and us) and he assured us it would be free forever.  Check the recording to find out more.

Where? Google Hangout on Air

What was this about?

I was so impressed with this review of EdPuzzle http://sco.lt/4uf7GT that I registered as a user. This prompted an automated response from Quim, to which I responded, and to which he replied, so we negotiated an online meeting via HoA. Meanwhile I’ve found a power-EdPuzzle user in my workplace, Daniella, who joined us in the discussion of this intriguing video embed tool. Benjamin was also there with questions about advanced aspects of the tool. Quim sent us a short and useful introduction here: goo.gl/IHD0Ef

What happened during  the chat?

Quim offered links relating to EdPuzzle

And we were attacked by a griefer (first time ever 🙂

Our first ever griefer was apparently a netizen from Russia who dropped in on us with a hulk avatar and disrupted proceedings by rapping into the mic.  I muted him (from his profile, appears to be a young boy) he unmuted, I ejected him, and that worked for 30 seconds till he managed to get back in. We had 9 in the HoA so while I was ejecting him the second time with one hand, I managed to get myself in on another computer with the other and fill the HoA, and we had no further visitations. All in all, it was amusing chaos, all part of the HoA experience.

Meanwhile I have found an easier way to deal with ths. I’ve consulted

Digital learning tools are becoming ever more common in K-6 classrooms. With this shift, teachers are looking for high-quality content for students that allows them to differentiate instruction and assess student comprehension.

In this TIME For Kids webinar we’ll offer tips on how to incorporate multimedia across the curriculum, with suggestions from TFK teachers.

Special emphasis will be placed on introducing the new TIME For Kids tablet app, which offers lessons and assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards as well as multimedia enhancements that allow teachers to meet the needs of individual learners.
