Becoming a Webhead is not offered as an EVO session for the first time in ten years, but its moderators have created an alternative EVO session to follow on the collaborative spirit of BaW – ICT4ELT at http://ict4elt2014.pbworks.com. Now that BaW is no longer being offered, its moderators think it important to introduce ICT4ELT participants to the Webheads <http://www.webheads.info>, so they have invited Vance Stevens to join them in a live session in Week 5. This would be also an opportunity for ICT4ELT to get to know Learning2gether, at which, says Jose Antonio Da Silva, “there is always someone presenting something very interesting every weekend.” (Thanks, Jose 🙂

It resonates with me where Keith talks about his disorientation since the first MOOC he attended, where he had to figure out how to do it better next time. He concludes, “Almost anything you pick in a MOOC will work for you … One of the things I learned to give up very quickly was trying to get it all.  I’m not going to.”

At 25:01 Dave says, “I wonder if that binding that you’re talking about when we look at … one of the first criticisms that people have of the Internet, of Twitter, of MOOCs,  abundant things generally … and I see certainly the potential of rhizomatic learning totally bundled with abundance … I wonder if the shaping that normally happens in curriculum is about creating certainty through scarcity — so that we say that these are the things that we’re going to learn, and then as learners we’ve gotten accustomed to not missing anything, being getting all the curriculum because we were supposed to get it all, and whether or not that’s one of the sort of underlying  constructs of the paper based world that needs to be opened up for people to be able to learn and think rhizomatically.”

Ali Bostancioglu is a PhD student at the University of York, UK, where he is investigating the impact of engaging in online communities of practice on EFL teachers’ technology professional development. He will talk about communities vs. networks and how different social media platforms can best be used in pursuit of technology professional development. His presentation ends with advice for managing both the affordances and potential pitfalls of social media platforms.

This is a really cool hangout. Prior to this Dave had been experimenting with creating breakout rooms during the hangouts, creating gaps on the audio that could easily be removed, but some odd moments on the YouTube videos where he would be puttering about his house and visibly (but not audibly) engaging in the breakouts.  Also, the previous recordings came off as monologues, at odds with his so-inclusive Worldbridges endeavors, whereas this one he has invited others into the hangout, admitting voices of  others in the MOOC, and thereby embracing uncertainty while pulling off another totally extemporaneous event that models what it intends to get across, that certainty is an attempt to control proceedings by falling back on scarcity; uncertainty in turn embraces abundance.
