Vance Stevens and Jim Buckingham – MultiMOOC and Rhizo14: What was that all about?

For 5 weeks in January-February 2014 Vance Stevens, Jim Buckingham, and Ali Bostancioglu co-moderated an EVO (Electronic Village Online) session on Multiliteracies with focus on MOOCs, called MultiMOOC, with portals at

On Sun Feb 23 Vance Stevens and Jim Buckingham presented a reflection: MultiMOOC: What was that all about?

as a regular weekly Learning2gether event conceived as a report and reflection on badges and the latest foray into chaos in learning wrought by the EVO session #MultiMOOC, and what has been learned from it, by two of the co-moderators that laid it on. This presentation was a vestige of EVO and the Rhizomatic Learning MOOC #Rhizo14, and took place as a part of Moodle MOOC 3

Vance prepared some remarks on his part of the program in a very rough draft, entitled The Elephant in the Fire Hose:

Vance Stevens presents “Once a Webhead always a Webhead”

Learning2gether Episode 202

Download mp3:

On Tue Feb 11 Vance Stevens presented at a MultiMOOC and ICT4ELT EVO sessions joint event – Once a Webhead always a Webhead

This was an Electronic Village Online event for Week 5 (Focus) in MultiMOOC EVO session, held jointly with ICT4ELT

Event listing on ICT4ELT portal:

In Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate)

In preparation for the event, you can read over the draft book chapter here:

It explains connections between Webheads in Action, WiAOC, Learning2gether, EVO, Becoming a Webhead, and MultiMOOC

Becoming a Webhead is not offered as an EVO session for the first time in ten years, but its moderators have created an alternative EVO session to follow on the collaborative spirit of BaW – ICT4ELT at Now that BaW is no longer being offered, its moderators think it important to introduce ICT4ELT participants to the Webheads <>, so they have invited Vance Stevens to join them in a live session in Week 5. This would be also an opportunity for ICT4ELT to get to know Learning2gether, at which, says Jose Antonio Da Silva, “there is always someone presenting something very interesting every weekend.” (Thanks, Jose 🙂

Here is a summary of what ICT4ELT will be covering in EVO Week 5 (Jan 10 – 16, 2014)

  • Cooperating online & wrap-up.
  • Revisiting Twitter, wikis, blogs, google docs (one platform of participants’ choice)
  • International project work with other participants of the course, possible school projects for the future
  • Finding out about the Webheads community as a PLN – the possibility of joining the Webheads

Learning2gether with Prof. dr. Jozef Colpaert discussing 12 CALL Challenges

Learning2gether Episode 201

On Sun Feb 9 Jozef Colpaert discussed 12 CALL Challenges as an Electronic Village Online event for Week 4 (Clustering) in MultiMOOC EVO session and as a Connecting Online 14 conference event (CO14)

What was this about?

Where? WizIQ

Our discussion stems from Dr. Colpaert’s presentation at WorldCALL in Glasgow, July 2013

The 12 challenges Jozef Colpaert recently identified and presented at WorldCALL 2013 in Glasgow are classified into three categories:

  1. contextual (academic meritocracy, academic value of CALL, myths/hypes and broad-public perception),
  2. methodological (design, replication, slow research and transdisciplinarity), and
  3. epistemological (open, psychological, smart and sustainable aspects)

As per

Shortly after this presentation, on Feb 9 Curt Bonk presented also at C014

Sat Feb 8 CO14 Stephen Downes
A personal learning framework

As we evolved into the next generation of MOOCs, it will become increasingly important to be able to manage our personal learning activities ourselves, rather than to depend on a particular institution. In this presentation, Stephen Downes outlines and defends this proposition, showing how personal learning support will benefit people from school through formal education through to the workplace.

Sun Feb 9 Dr Revathy Viswanathan at CO14
Dr Revathy Viswanathan kicked off CO14 for Sunday Feb 9 noon GMT with a talk entitled
“Scope for Teacher Development in Digital Era”

Teachers in this digital era have varied teaching experiences in their classrooms. Every session is challenging and educative to both teachers and that is facilitated more by advanced technologies. With the growing trend of using emerging technologies, it has become essential for teachers to update their knowledge of integrating technology in a traditional classroom. It must be stated that universities have to pave way for augmenting the use of new technologies in a classroom by revamping curriculum periodically. In that way it provides opportunity for teachers to develop their teaching and professional skills besides providing exposure to new technological tools to students. In this presentation, the presenter would share her experience of using Wiki and Blogs with her students in teaching written communication. She would further highlight the way those tools had helped her to design materials for learning and also created opportunities for encouraging students to work in online platforms.

Hello Little World, Feb 24

Is MOOCs making us stupid?

Here’s the teaser

And now the hangout

It resonates with me where Keith talks about his disorientation since the first MOOC he attended, where he had to figure out how to do it better next time. He concludes, “Almost anything you pick in a MOOC will work for you … One of the things I learned to give up very quickly was trying to get it all.  I’m not going to.”

At 25:01 Dave says, “I wonder if that binding that you’re talking about when we look at … one of the first criticisms that people have of the Internet, of Twitter, of MOOCs,  abundant things generally … and I see certainly the potential of rhizomatic learning totally bundled with abundance … I wonder if the shaping that normally happens in curriculum is about creating certainty through scarcity — so that we say that these are the things that we’re going to learn, and then as learners we’ve gotten accustomed to not missing anything, being getting all the curriculum because we were supposed to get it all, and whether or not that’s one of the sort of underlying  constructs of the paper based world that needs to be opened up for people to be able to learn and think rhizomatically.”

Rhizo14 Week 3 Embracing Uncertainty

Download mp3

This is a really cool hangout. Prior to this Dave had been experimenting with creating breakout rooms during the hangouts, creating gaps on the audio that could easily be removed, but some odd moments on the YouTube videos where he would be puttering about his house and visibly (but not audibly) engaging in the breakouts.  Also, the previous recordings came off as monologues, at odds with his so-inclusive Worldbridges endeavors, whereas this one he has invited others into the hangout, admitting voices of  others in the MOOC, and thereby embracing uncertainty while pulling off another totally extemporaneous event that models what it intends to get across, that certainty is an attempt to control proceedings by falling back on scarcity; uncertainty in turn embraces abundance.
