Learning2gether in Hangout with Jose Antonio Da Silva on Mobile Learning Tips and Issues

Learning2gether Episode 216

Sun May 11 Hangout – Learning2gether with Jose Antonio Da Silva on Mobile Learning Tips and Issues

What Jose, plans  to talk about
Jose and his colleagues have been using iPads in class since 2012 after Carla Arena got a grant with the first set of 20 iPads for one of the branches at Casa Thomas Jefferson in Brasilia. Now that there are sets in all branches, the teachers at CTJ have done quite a lot in the area of mobile learning and learned to address some of the issues that might surface when one decides to use mobile devices. These are some of things that Jose hopes to share with the community.

Jose is a teacher at Casa Thomas Jefferson in Brasilia, frequent contributor at EVO Electronic Village Online, and travels consistently to conferences around the globe. He is a natural teacher who shares expertise with colleagues worldwide, and it will be interesting to chat with him and share our knowledge about mobile learning and iPads https://twitter.com/joseantoniook

Mon Apr 28 2:00 ET – The Role of Badges in Alternative Credentialing

Monday, April 28, 2-3:00 ET: The Role of Badges in Alternative Credentialing – In response to specific employer/industry requirements and the particular needs of the adult learner, interest in new approaches to credentialing is on the rise. In December, 2013, the U.S. Dept. of Education issued a notice inviting suggestions for new experiments for the Experimental Sites Initiative. The notice expressed particular interest in competency-based education programs and prior learning assessment for postsecondary education. This session will investigate various ways that open badges provide the basis for alternative credentialing programs.

Join us on Saturday, May 3rd, when our special guest will be Swaroop Raju, eduCanon Co-Founder” who will introduce us to the amazing teaching resource, eduCanon! eduCanon is an online learning environment to build and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, LearnZillion, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components – increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning. Teachers have used the eduCanon interface in class as a blended tool, assigned students an eduCanon lesson as homework in a flipped setting, and even asked students to create their own eduCanon lesson as a higher-Bloom’s project! eduCanon is flexible to suit the resources and teaching style of your classroom. eduCanon is a FREE web app that works on all major browsers. It works on Macs, PCs, and is even responsive to iPads. You can even embed it into your website or blog!

More information and details are at http://live.classroom20.com. If you’re new to the Classroom 2.0 LIVE! show you might want to spend a few minutes viewing the screencast on the homepage to learn how we use Blackboard Collaborate, and navigate the site. We were told to “watch email” but I have not found where recordings of these plenaries are publicly available

Thu Mar 27 0030 PST Surin Pitsuwan streamed live from TESOL 2014 in Portland Opening Keynote, Surin Pitsuwan Wednesday, 26 March 2014, 5:30 pm–7 pm in Portland; 04:30 in UAE English as A Powerful Instrument of Community Building in East Asia For the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), English has been designated as an official “working language” for the regional organization. In such a diverse group of countries, one common language is not possible. And ASEAN’s success has been instrumental in bringing other larger and more powerful countries of East Asia and the Pacific together under the ASEAN-ledarchitecture of cooperation. The only language that is widely accepted as an instrument of integration for the emerging East Asian community is English. How a “foreign language” can bind and build an emerging community of nations in East Asia is another “Asian Miracle.”

Thu Mar 27 1500 GMT David Graddol streamed live from TESOL 2014 in Portland Thursday, 27 March 2014, 8 am–9 am in Portland; 7 p.m. in UAE Five Megatrends Shaping the Future of TESOL English has become a centrepiece of education reform in many countries. I show how this is often in response to developments in economics, demographics, and technology—which are reshaping the nature of teaching and learning English around the world. David Graddol is director of The English Company (UK) Ltd, which provides consultancy and publishing services in applied linguistics, with a special focus on English language and education policy. In The Future of English? (1997), David set out a new agenda for understanding the growing importance of English as an international language and its role in globalisation. English Next (2006), provided an update on English in global education.  English Next India (2010) explores the changing status of English in India. Profiling English in China: The Pearl River Delta (2013) examines public discourses and the linguistic landscapes of a part of China that is experiencing rapid change. English Next Brazil will be published in March 2014.

Vance Stevens is presenting on “Learning2gether with EVO MultiMOOC and SMALL” at the EV Classic Fair

Saturday March 29, 2014: 10:00 to 10:50 PST in the Electronic Village

That session is being webcast on Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) from 1800 -1850 GMT

http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/

and the recording will be archived at http://learning2gether.net

The first MOOC was conceived in 2008 as a model of connectivist learning theory. Its proponents George Siemens, Stephen Downes, and Dave Cormier almost inadvertently seeded a revolution in re-thinking how we conceive learning in a highly networked digital age. Since then, MOOCs have tended to fall between two extremes which have come to be known as cMOOCs and xMOOCs. These are differentiated in part in the way they approach their subject matter; i.e. the degree to which they expose participants to the chaos they are likely to encounter in the real world, and the degree to which they engage learners in resolving that chaos. This part of the workshop examines what MOOCs can teach us about the role of chaos in our own learning, and suggests how we can apply MOOC models to our contexts of facilitating our students’ learning, and in learning from one another in our ongoing professional development.

From teacher networked learning to transformation in your classroom from Vance Stevens

Flipping your classroom

According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_teaching
the HISTORY of flipped classroom begins here

  • The classroom flip by j. Wesley baker is in a collection of papers published on ERIC
    http://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED440975

“Baker presented “The classroom flip: using web course management tools to become the guide by the side” at the 11th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning. Baker’s article presents the model of classroom flipping.”
  • It looks like the Kahn Academy might have been the first to have institutionalized flipped classroom: “In 2004, Salman Khan began to record videos at the request of a younger cousin who felt that recorded lessons would let her skip parts she had mastered and replay parts that were troubling her. Khan’s model essentially provides one-to-one tutoring. Khan Academy videos are used as part of some educators’ flipped teaching strategy.”

You can find more details at the Wikipedia article. The idea for the flipped classroom was well entrenched when on Sunday, June 10, 2012 – Laine Marshall came on Learning2gether to present ‘Three reasons to flip your classroom’
https://learning2gether.net/2012/06/11/learning2gether-with-laine-marshall-three-rea/

Ways to flip your classroom, modeled here

Spontaneous Hangout Recordings

We set up two Hangouts on Air (HoA) during our PCI events

These two hangouts were recorded spontaneously in one of the renditions of my part of the PCI session.  I’m not sure in the video why you can’t see the other hangout windows. At some point we show the iPad which was also in the Hangout, and you can see the other Hangout on Air windows fleetingly on its screen, and at the beginning of the snippet I point on the PC to a window (the iPad) that was there on the screen though you can’t see it in this recording.

More F.U.N. with another group of participants but this time the iPad Hangout app was not offering me the new Hangout I had just started, so it was just the 4 of us, and last round of my part of the PCI in a long day 🙂

More examples and sample form triggered by QR Code to appear here shortly

TITLE: Task-Based Instruction in Foreign Language Education SUBTITLE: Practices and Programs PUBLISHER: Georgetown University Press YEAR: 2004 “CHAPTER TEN: Webhead communities: Writing tasks interleaved with synchronous online communication and web page development (Vance Stevens) Another instance of virtual classroom implementing writing tasks is described in this chapter. The author reports activities of groups of learners and teachers involved in online writing practices. The writing tasks were aimed at purposeful interaction and technology was a vehicle of implementing pedagogical principles not the driving force. The author’s initiative for conducting an online writing and grammar course is reported to have been the starting point of this community of online writers called Webheads. The group interactions involved various topics including projects on which teachers interacted and themes and tasks of interest to learners. Cost, ease of use, multicasting capability, and cross platform adaptability were the criteria in selecting the tools for computer mediated communication. Email groups, web pages, and synchronous chat were the major modalities of interaction and implementation of tasks. After a brief discussion on evaluation and in the conclusion section the author mentions lowering affective obstacles and promoting a sense of community as the main message from the project and recommends that the model be applied in other situations. In an appendix some technology related issues are dealt with.
