Learning2gether with Jeff Magoto about the new ANVILL-LTI

On Sunday Oct 18 Learning2gether were treated to a nearly-two hour tour of ANVILL-LTI by its managing developer Jeff Magoto, who talked to us about

Interactions in ANVILL from the Formulaic to the Pragmatically Pleasing

ANVILL-LTI is web-based software that has three aims: 1) to provide language teachers with a set of speech and lesson creation tools that make it easy to practice and assess spoken language, 2) to build a community of teachers who are willing to share their lessons and ideas around listening and speaking, and 3) to understand (from a CALL developer’s perspective) what kinds of computer-based interactions teachers and students find most beneficial and interesting. We explored these by looking at some of the most popular tasks teachers assign in ANVILL—from telecollaborations to listen n’ repeat, and the results those tasks yield.

ANVILL is a free and versatile LMS that focuses on allowing learners to interact in voice with teachers and each other in a tastefully designed flipped learning environment. That environment is succinctly defined in a 10-page manual available here, http://babel-old.uoregon.edu/ylc/downloads/anvill-LTI%20overview-v.3.pdf;  with a page each devoted to ANVILL’s main features (voiceboards, portfolios, chat, and integration with other LMS’s such as MOODLE).

We are very excited to have Jennifer Garcia joining us as our special guest presenter on Saturday, October 17, for her presentation: “Green Screens + iPads = iMagic!” She will be sharing projects her students have done using green screens on the iPads with DoInk’s Green Screen App. We’ll get a guided tour of the entire process including setup, equipment, apps, workflow, assessment strategies and possible issues to be aware of. We’ll also get to see a few examples of her student work and have access to the online lessonsshe created to help you as you build your own projects. We’ll also get to see some examples from other teachers along with their resources. This will be most beneficial to teachers who have access to iPads in their classrooms, but it’s always exciting to learn about tools, apps and the possibilities for enhancing digital story telling with any tools you may have access to and we would welcome participants willing to share the tools and project examples for digital storytelling projects you are using in your classrooms.

Vance, You’ve messaged that today we have more chats,
are they before or after?
Hi, sorry I didn’t check here yesterday. There was an IATEFL YLSIG event on Sunday, and today Monday we are meeting with Dr. Christel Broady in Hangout, more information here http://tinyurl.com/learning2gether or athttp://webheadsinaction.org/live
That starts in about half an hour
Christel is in the Hangout now. You are welcome to join us there, we start in ten minutes:https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_/hoaevent/AP36tYf56YrJcTErVcePnTocXFvC5PtGqArFetAP5iFM4WG6gOj9iw?hl=en&authuser=0
Hello all!
Seems OK for me here …ouf
(in chrome)
Looks good in Chromium (linux)…
I find there’s quite a few things that don’t work in Chrome …. I daren’t go linux 😦
Removing barriers for me means making learning more equitable…
hi everyone
Hi Maha, nice to see you
I tried to join but it takes me to an empty hangout where I am on my own 🙂 .. I will watch and comment here 🙂
thanks Vance I am happy I could join
We saw you in the Hangout
Love forms in Google Drive!
…for polls, instant feedback in class, etc.
I love forms for the students to write comprehension questions … they love it
🙂 me too
The links are ab fab – I’ve made my own copy to be sure I don’t loose them …. big thanks
Are MGuhlin and CloudHQ free?
I think MGuhlin is a blog
Miguel Guhlin, a K-12 blogger
Google drive integrates well with gmail as well…
the hangout is a bit slow for me I think . I couldn’t even hear anything. But I am good here .. good place to participate with you 🙂
HOA is fine at this end…
great, ahlan
I like spanning my google drive: https://freetools.spanning.com/stats/
we’ll get you to explain that in a moment in the Hangout
Yes Dr Christel, I have had many Teachers say that to me too! I use Google drive sharing documents or folders with my students.
Using Google drive to flip the classroom…
People who are afraid of these tools often do their banking on line (and belong FB)
Sharing documents as long as they are CC or one has rights to do so.
Google Drive also integrates well with Google Sites…
Sharing documents and videos is what I do too!
Hi Vance 🙂
Hi Nives, glad you could join us
Sometimes it’s easier to share videos in Google drive rather than Youtube which is not accessible to all students. Plus I love creating Lesson slides directly in the drive and adding it to the class materials folder for students to access whenever.
Google docs are good for student collaborative projects…
lol yes but how big of a loss .. That must’ve been really awful to loose years worth of work
I am disappointed that Google Classroom is not available for Private Tutoring or Teacher Training 😦
Me too Nives!
I usually backup what I really care about and I don’t usually trust the cloud alone
It’s such a great tool (Google Classroom) that it’s a dying shame that Google have such strict access to it.
yes me too Nives 😦
@Benjamin and @Maha 🙂
Interesting about videos … I wonder if that’s only with Classroom, because I did try once unsuccessfully
Also, Google Sites!
another one to tell us about, feel free to grab the mic, speak up when you hear ‘next
Social apps in schools is a bit touchy here in Italy, but using sites like Twiducate is safe and private offering social interaction without the public interaction. I’m looking at EdMettle too for the same, has anyone tried it?
feel free to comment on this, or ask in the live h/a
HoA
OMG – I’ve lost the sound altogether now (on my super duper brand new machine ) so I’m giving up all together – please say a BIG thanks for all the great links …. very useful indeed.
oooh this is great.. I’ve been trying to do this but couldn’t see how.. thank you
I agree…all teachers should have a YouTube channel.
thanks Elizabeth, your thanks will be in the show notes
I like Google Maps too for a class on ‘directions’ in English language. I get the students to create their own location and give directions in a dialogue.
what do you use to leave comments on a non apple computer?
Great idea a ‘photo story’ with photos, thank you Dr Christel 🙂
in what application, Maha?
Maha, are you asking about Google Docs?
Docs
What system are you running Maha?
windows 7
I insert comments into Google Docs from PC, Ctrl-alt-m
As far as I know Maha, leaving comments in Google Docs is the same for all operating systems…
ok thank you both I will try them later 🙂
I select the text, then right-click…
Or click “Insert”, then “comment”…
Hm this looks interesting for Reading Comprehension must give it a try … thanks 🙂
voice comments Benjamin?
I agree using images to express or expand their vocab is a great tool even with adult learners not just kids
Great Idea picture dictionaries for beginners
Vance is the expert on voice comments…I think there is an addon or extension, right?
You can enter comments by voice using android and tablet devices
Thanks for the link to the slides Vance 🙂
What slide are we on Vance??
ah android ok thanks
Hi Brian 🙂 nice to see you here
slide 26
Brian it’s slide 29
Got it now
Hi Brian
I have installed that Ben but for some reason couldn’t do voice in my doc. will try again
Hi Nives
thanks
Hi Vance
IATEFL SIG Bi-Monthly Webinars 2015-2016
Waiting for explanation on how to create schedules for webathones alco chains of events
U r welcome Brian 🙂
uh oh, connection lost and call ended
Google Docs addons I use: Consistency Checker, EasyBib, Kaizena, and Thesaurus…
Yes hear you Christel 🙂
I’m looking at slides on my google docs
Brian move to slide 31
Google Drive = transparent education
@Benjamin I agree
But they want to learn free
Thanks all for a great chat! Off to class!
ciao @Benjamin enjoy your class
have a great day Benjamin
I like the reference of the Backchannel chat to ‘digital brother’ Dr Christel
I keep dropping out
I think it may still be recording
yes I hear you
it’s trying to reconnect
great idea 🙂 Christel
the voice is lost
can you hear now Halima?
Thank you Dr Christel, your slides are powerful as always you have so much to share it’s wonderful learning from you, thank you 🙂
Dr Christel is that Native Speaking tool only available in Classroom?
Looks like we’re back online here
is Exit ticket a written reflection?
Bravo Vance 🙂 I live with technology hassles everyday living in the Italian countryside so am glad today is going ‘great’ so far 🙂
the voice lag is back, not a good sign
yes you are online just heard you Vance
we are doing fine so far .. It may be only on your side Vance
I think it is on my side
HoA is a great tool for Teaching online, I have used it but what I really look for is an interactive whiteboard to use when tutoring students online live
I recently have used EZTalks which has a great screen sharing tool and interactive whiteboard plus it’s free for up to 3 in a session
wish you could talk with us in Hangout but your comments will appear in the show notes at http://learning2gether.net
or a quick journal or something .
Nice cat Vance
thank you I like the idea
Nives, have you tried WizIq?
Hi Glenys, yes I am currently using WizIQ as a Teacher also with Dr Nellie’s moodle team
@Glenys my problem is that sometimes WizIQ is too heavy to run on a low internet connection
I tried Wisiq and also some separate boards but for some reason they are usually buggy . even Wiziq staff told me that my bandwidth was not good enough so I usually use hangouts
@Maha I understand exactly what you mean 🙂 even if I have used WizIQ for nearly 3 years
A BIG THANK YOU DR CHRISTEL for a great presentation and magnificent very informative slides 🙂
thank you so much for all the information and resources Dr. Christel
Thank you Dr Christel for a very interesting talk
Ciao Vance, Brian, Dr Christel great to connect again online 🙂
Thank You Dr.Christel!!!
I think she is talking about the webenthons
how to design something for her university
I agree it is wonderful to connect across the globe 🙂
you’re breaking up a bit Vance
anyone can join us for the NileTESSOL ? 🙂
yes thank you all again thanks a lot Vance for organizing it
have a good day/evening
Christel asked me to share links on how to set up these hangouts. Jamie Keddie is a teacher, trainer and international conference speaker. He is the founder of the recently-relaunched Lessonstream. Jamie’s areas of interest include the use of visual materials, storytelling and video technologies in the classroom. His publications include ‘Images’ (OUP 2009) and ‘Bringing online video into the classroom’ (OUP 2014).

In the last few years, online video has been embraced and reinvented by young people. In this webinar, I would like to examine a number of recent case studies which serve to introduce YouTube youth cultures to teachers. Be warned – you may be shocked! I will also talk about why understanding this can be useful to those of us who work with teenagers.

TESOL Arabia Chapter SIG Conference in Dubai with Jim Buckingham on-site and Vance Stevens at a distance

Learning2gether Episode 294

Download mp3:
https://learning2getherdotnet.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/pd-tesol-arabia-discover-such-opportunities-today-xff1cx_ozg.mp3?

On Saturday October 3 at 0730 UTC, 11:30 in UAE, Jim Buckingham had finally found a parking place and was heading up to his presentation room at the TESOL Arabia Chapter SIG Conference, while Vance Stevens was getting the Hangout on Air and Learning2gether spaces properly configured from his home in Al Ain, UAE.

We were planning to converge at a distance on Jim’s on-site presentation at the TESOL Arabia SIG conference in Dubai on professional development opportunities available online via TAEDTech SIG and #learning2gether. Meanwhile Chris Fry in Barcelona was waiting for the stream to start on our Google+ event page, and Halima Ozimova in Tashkent was in Chatwing waiting for me to provide the URL to the live chat. Eventually Glenys Hanson from France joined us in the HoA as well, http://www.glenys-hanson.info/

The event was billed as …

Online PD? TESOL Arabia? Discover such opportunities today

Jim Buckingham, Zayed University, UAE
Vance Stevens, HCT-CERT, UAE

This TAEdTech SIG session gives an overview of what online professional development opportunities TESOL Arabia already supports and those planned for the future. The presentation will also feature a “live” demonstration of online professional development strategies currently being used by TESOL Arabia’s Education Technology SIG with special attention placed on how these strategies are free, easy to use and available to anyone.

We were on at noon Dubai time (0800 UTC) in this program:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8r1jrc3n6aiZHVJQ3JmRnBRTjJxS1EwVUdheTVOaWk1NzFn/view

Here is the Chatwing text chat for this session copy / pasted below:

Vance Stevens – I’m waiting for the presenter Jim to enter the HoA before posting the direct link, but if you’re looking for it, let me know and I’ll post it here sooner.
Halima Ozimova – Am waiting for a colleague from Russia May be her University could be the sponsor for Your trainings?!!!
Vance Stevens – ok, here I’m waiting for the presenter to enter the HoA, I’ll post the direct link here shortly
he isn’t due to start until 0800 UTC ( in 8 min)

He could be having problems there, it’s complicated to set up a Hangout at a live event

Jim is in mobile phone contact and telling me what to expect

Halima Ozimova – the voice is too low…sorry, must leave, because I do hear nothing
