The topic is: “The iPads are coming! The iPads are coming! HELP! They’re here!”
I teach in a military college and as they do here, we were told in our last hour of the working day before the weekend that we should expect our students to be given iPads on Sunday (first day of our teaching week). These will be iPads out of the box. We’ll have to start by getting the students onto the app store (we have ensured that each has an email address). We also have lists of recommended apps, and I imagine we’ll start them downloading those.
We’ve been doing a lot of training on iPad use in which we’ve been shown a lot of apps, but there has been nothing on how it will work to bring students up to using those apps. Given this situation, what would you start them off on to do something productive for language learning on day one that would be dead simple to implement? I have my ideas but none are tested at the moment. By 1600 GMT Sunday March 3, they will have been.
I would love to share my first day experience with this situation and discuss this with colleagues wishing to share their insights gained through their own experiences.

Before a badge is awarded, issuers must verify that a badge seeker has acquired the skills and/or competencies that the badge represents. That verification happens through evidence-based assessment. In other words, not assessment based on a learner’s ability to recall information about how to do something – actual evidence that demonstrates the learner can do that thing. During this session, we will look at various strategies for assessment that generate evidence of competency or skill mastery. Anne Derryberry will lead the session, and will be joined by Joanna Normoyle (UC Davis’ Agricultural Sustainability Institute) and Phillip Ash (CyraCom), each of whom will present the learning program, badge system, and assessment strategies they are designing.
