Sat Feb 20 1700 UTC – Billy Krakower on Classroom 2.0 – Technology for students with learning disabilities

We are thrilled to have Billy Krakower joining us in this webinar to share some great tips on ways to harness the power of technology to improve learning and engagement for students who have learning disabilities. This is the focus of his new book ”Using Technology to Engage Students with Learning Disabilities” which he co-authored with Sharon Plante(@iplante). The format of this webinar will be a little different. Instead of a presentation it will be conducted as an interview with Paula Naugle facilitating the session. We are excited to learn about teaching tools and strategies they recommend for students with learning disabilities, including gifted students. We’ll be asking about using assistive technology to teach core subjects and study skills, recommendations for tools that provide better content accessibility and ways to help student connect and share through tech tools among many other things. This will be a perfect opportunity for you to join us to ask your questions about working with students who have learning disabilities. The Livebinder will have tons of excellent resources!

Billy Krakower (@wkrakower), is a full-time teacher at Woodland Park Public Schools in Woodland Park, New Jersey, where he has taught computers and special education to grades 3 and 4 for over eight years. He is the Chief Financial & Event Officer for Evolving Educators, LLC (evolvingeducators.com). Billy co-moderates two weekly Twitter chats, #NJed chat and #satchat (for educational leaders). He co-hosts “SatChat Radio,” a weekly show interviewing educators on BAM Radio Network and available on iTunes. Billy is one of the lead organizers of edcampNJ and edcampLeadership North NJ. Billy is a 2014 ASCD Emerging Leader, and a member of the NJASCD Executive board and serves as the Technology Committee Chair.

On Sunday Feb 7 at 1400 UTC Vance staked out his usual time and space at the 2016 rendition of the free online Connecting Online Conference which took place from Friday Feb 5 and ran though Sunday Feb 7
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Kh0MBy0eKHpiMZhSXCg6Ny-mLqwP58Jdf0LTXZn5HC0/

The title of the talk was
Learning2gether with EVO Minecraft MOOC and Gamification of Teacher Professional Development

This presentation relates how #evomc16 co-moderators are using Minecraft to help teachers understand how gamification might work for them in their classrooms by giving all concerned the experience of interacting in the game.

But, Minecraft turns out to be only a vehicle for understanding the wider concept of gamification. By building elements of gamification into EVO Minecraft MOOC, this session becomes a Big G game space where participants can meet other educators to learn how their students can benefit from gamified environments. So participants here (as well as moderators) are developing their understanding of gamification while enjoying playing in the little g game of Minecraft.

Gamification is modeled in the Big G Game space through creation of a Google+ community “gameboard” and having participants figure out from there what they have to do to play the game. Eventually they end up in Minecraft in creative mode. They then graduate to coping with survival in the more challenging game environment, and through that experience learn that gamification is all about teamwork, mutual support, meeting challenges, and achieving goals, whatever they are, and however they themselves define them.

The ‘aha’ moment occurs when the players succeed in both the upper and lowercase games and realize that, if what they were trying to teach were placed in such a context, it would not only become more engaging to the learners, but their students would be taking their own learning into their own hands. This can create a powerful learning environment, but educators need to experience it for themselves in order to understand it.

On Wed Feb 3 Vance Stevens presented on EVO Minecraft MOOC for participants at the Techno-CLIL EVO MOOC. The talk was titled Vance Stevens on Minecraft and FLT and CLILfor the WizIQ announcement, but Vance called it

A Convergence of Minecraft and Techno-CLIL

Recordings:

This presentation is about a correspondence between two EVO (Electronic Village Online) sessions:

  1. the EVO Minecraft MOOC (EVOMC16) and
  2. Techno-CLIL (content and language integrated) approach to language development

This was the abstract

There is much evidence that Minecraft can enhance language development; for example, the cases discussed in in an article by co-moderators of the EVOMC16 session (Smolčec & Smolčec, 2014). This presentation will suggest to educators interested in adopting the CLIL approach how they might consider Minecraft as a representation of content, and see how language development might derive from interaction in a gamified environment based on that content.

The EVOMC16 session provides an opportunity for educators to understand how this might work for them by having them explore gamification through the experience of being in a game that that looks like Minecraft, but is in fact a place where they can meet other educators learning how their students can benefit from gamified environments. These educators learn through following a model whereby they go to a Google+ community and figure out from there what they have to do to play the game. Eventually they end up in Minecraft in creative mode, and then graduate to coping with survival, as they come to see, by cooperating with other players in the more challenging game environment.  The ‘aha’ moment occurs when the players succeed and realize that if what they were trying to teach were placed in such a context, it would not only become more engaging to the learners, but their students would be taking their own learning into their own hands. This can create a powerful learning environment, and educators need to experience it for themselves in order to understand it.

So, we are all learning about gamification here. It’s not so much about Minecraft. Minecraft is the little g game (Gee, 2008), the enabler of our emerging knowledge of gamification. When you enter survival mode you’ll find that you are assisted by others in world. With their help you stay alive and learn. So gamification turns out to be learning through teamwork and mutual support and meeting challenges and achieving your goal, whatever it is. In this game you set your own goals. By achieving your goals in the game light bulbs go off in your head and light your way to some realization of how what you are learning in Minecraft might work to meet your real world challenges.

The discussion was about how blogs and wikis are used in conjunction with one another to sustain Learning2gether all these years, so it was basically about the affordances of each that allow them to work in tandem.

Last year’s conference featured more than twenty general sessions and four keynote addresses from all over the world with over 500 participants!

If you haven’t joined us before, this is an amazing, engaging, collaborative, worldwide event that you will want to be a part of. You can join us for just for one session, or for every session! Even if you miss a session, they are all recorded so you can watch them later!

Attending: You can join us anywhere you have an Internet connection, and theschedule of sessions is published in each of the time zones in the world. Just find your time zone, find the sessions taking place, and click right into the ones you want to join. You can also import the entire calendar (Google) into your own calendar, or add selected sessions to your personal calendar to be sure that you don’t miss them.

Presenting: For those interested in presenting (and we encourage teachers and students around the world to do so, even if for the first time), the call for proposals is now open! The final date to submit a proposal is Saturday, January 23, 2016. Click HERE for more information and to submit your proposal.

Volunteering: One of the best parts of this conference is the incredible volunteer effort to help new (and sometimes seasoned!) presenters. Volunteers gather throughout the whole conference in a special virtual lounge and work to make sure that presenters and attendees are given help whenever they need it. Our volunteers are an elite group of global helpers–come find out why they say being a volunteer moderator is the most fun you can have at the conference. More HERE.

The Community: A significant bonus to attending the Student Technology Conference is joining the conference community of students and educators from around the world.

Great Keynotes: Who better to keynote the Student Technology Conference than students. We have a great set of keynote speakers this year, including the Young Hackers of New York City and Coco Kaleel from veryhappyrobot.com. More keynotes will be announced after the holidays!

Sponsors: We’ve got a devoted and most-appreciated set of sponsors who make this conference possible (and keep it free!). Our special thanks to Marymounyt School of New York, University School of Milwaukee, Westhampton Middle School, Lauriston Girls’ School and others who support our conference. And there’s still time to join this illustrious group and help support our event! Email steve@hargadon.com.

Help Promote the Conference: We can really use your help to share the conference with your colleagues, associates, friends, family (!), and the world.. Show your pride with a presenter, volunteer, sponsor, partner, or advisory board member badge.

Thorsten Groß works at the Ricarda Huch-Schule in Dreieich where he and his students use Minecraft in Working Communities. During a BarCamp about Games the idea of reconstructing their whole school was planned and later on finished by students themselves using Mahara as an organization platform,
https://plus.google.com/113742735224806254960/posts/6MuW3CP1Pmb

Our EVO Minecraft MOOC group was guided through the world by students at the school who were most active builderrs and got some explanation how the students organized themselves to build it. Thorsten explained how the BarCamp initiated the whole thing, but the main part was with the three main constructors who described what they learned during the construction, presenting a basic evidence of their learning.

The students were

  • Maxim Kuznetsov
  • Florian Tillmann
  • Tabish Khan

The meeting took place at the RHS Minecraft  server using Adobe Connect as a VoIP tool, hosted by Jeff Kuhn at Ohio University
https://adobeconnect.oit.ohio.edu/evomc16/

Vance entered both the Adobe Connect room and the RHS Minecraft server to record the event in Camtasia and post it to YouTube:

Thorsten left some reflections on the event

2016-02-02_1821thorsten

“Well, what a tour today. For one hour Maxim, Tabish and Florian guided Vance, Jeff and some MOOC-participants through this school building, explaining how it has been assembled from the ground plot to the final cut. With some photos (of both the reality and virtual snapshot) we described how the scaling worked and the students build the yellow rotunda, just to blast it with TNT (students humor). The students also talked about their problems like doubling the ground floor to implement redstone lines or separating the 16 workers in groups to work on several small construction sites. A flight around the building and a long walk through its interior gave a good impression of the detailed work. My personal highlight: several person’s avatars standing  in front of my (virtual) office room at the school. 😉

Thanks to Maxim, Florian and Tabish for this really impressive tour!! Also thanks to Vance and Jeff for their technical support! This event has given us a further impact on our activities to come in May 25./26. this year.”

Here is Mircea Patrascu’s view of the Roller Coaster he built, which we played on today

Here is a picture of Mircea just starting to build his maze. Here his is showing me the logic gates, which he had just got working.

Here below is my view from above the glass ceiling, which Filip crashed through in order to allow us all to escape the maze when someone inadvertently left clicked on the track and broke it, rendering the ride inoperable, and leaving us confused and trapped inside the building with no logic gates to open the doors to let us out. The adults in the party didn’t know what to do, but Filip, 12 years old, did the obvious and flew up to break the glass ceiling, ushering us to safety.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/cpffkf4oflluttsmoulm6dhr558

If you only ever teach ESL/EFL students one thing in Pronunciation let it be this. Research shows the best way to teach new information is by attaching it to old information (things learners already know). What is the first and often only thing students know in a new language? The names of colors. This webinar teaches how to use the names of colors as an accurate, inclusive foundation for the pronunciation of all English words. BONUS: you’ll also see how to help students find and generate WORD STRESS perfectly every single time. Grab a coffee, pen and paper and prepare to have your socks blown off.
