Sun Jan 19 1400 GMT Jim Buckingham – Badges and MultiMOOC

An Electronic Village Online event for Week 1 (Orientation) in MultiMOOC EVO session

Where: Google+Hangout

Time: 1400 GMT – Apologies, but our Google announcement was not correct
http://screencast.com/t/rADUoBLog

What’s it about? Jim Buckingham explains the concept of badges and how this concept applies in the MultiMOOC EVO session. In his words: ” I’m going to be hopefully sharing my interest and enthusiasm for what I think is likely to be one of the most fascinating Tech applications and strategies to impact on Education – Open Digital Badges in the foreseeable future. It has to rank up there with at least two other themes that are also attracting a great deal of my attention – MOOCs and Learning Analytics.”

I’ve been focusing on Open Digital Badges for a while now.. Was hoping for a pause to pursue an interest in exploring the other two but that just hasn’t happened yet.

My plan? Introduce you to Open Badges, evoke some comments on the topic, forward a draft on how we could proceed next, solicit your opinions on this, make the necessary revisions to that plan, and (in the interests of “connectivism”) see where we might go next.

Where?

What?

During the last decade, the use of podcasts, web-based recordings and videocasts have become very popular in the ELT field, since they are powerful asynchronous tools for ESL/EFL students to learn the target language, develop and/or enhance oral skills, especially listening/speaking. However, these tools are not only excellent resources for students, but for teachers. They can be used to evaluate, provide feedback, or as means to reinforce classroom activities. In this session, Evelyn and Miguel will be sharing their experience in the use of screencasting to provide feedback in an interesting, dynamic and interactive way to ESL/EFL teachers who have taken the Podcasting 2011, 2012, & 2013 EVO sessions.

Heike Philp – Web conferences for Continuous Professional Development

Learning2gether Episode 145

View on screencast.com »

Heike Philp took us through the highlights of various online conferences she has organized, been a part of, and most importantly, recorded.

As Heike said: “Top level guest speakers, a global audience, a lively chat and a sharing of know-how can all be had from the comfort of your home. What inspired me to start the first web conference was however another reason because truly I love to travel to conference just as much as attending them. What motivated me to run  web conferences is the fact that there are so many parallel sessions at each conference! One can actually spend all of this time and money and attend the conference and still miss more than half of the program. Not so in the case of web conferences. During a web conference all of the sessions can be recorded. And they are being watched … “
Noting that the Virtual Round Table WebCon, the DaFWEBKON for teachers of German, and the SLanguages Annual Symposium attracted some 4,500 synchronous participants in total, but that the recordings have been watched over 23,000 times, Heike supports the proposition that these recordings may serve as the ‘Khanacademy for language teachers’.

  • Elluminate has been chosen over Hangout because there is a TILL Sunday Hangout event on ePortfolios at 15:00 that some MultiMOOC participants will be attending, and it will be easier to transition there from Elluminate rather than stopping one Hangout and joining another.

Dave talks here about his ideas on learning and differentiates the nature of what needs to be learned into David Snowden’s simple, complicated, complex, and chaotic.  cMOOCs he said were expecially good at promoting learning at the complex and chaotic levels.  Listen here and find out why.

Hangouts are created on the fly, so their URLs are not generated until just before the event.  Normally they are shared within circles.

If Benjamin Stewart and/or Vance Stevens are sharing circles with you, there are two things you can try

  1. you can Skype vancestev for more information
  2.  Also Vance will likely still be in Elluminate http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/ for the first 15 min of this event, with the recording off, and you can possibly find me there for text chat directions to the Hangout

Jeff Lebow converges Hangout, Second Life, Elluminate, and WiZiQ for the EVO 2013 (Electronic Village Online) Mega-Launch

Learning2gether Episode 137

Elluminate (Bb Collaborate) recording, thanks to http://learningtimes.org

Hangout recording

What was this about?

This is an annual EVO event where moderators for the EVO sessions listed at http://evosessions.pbworks.com meet from noon GMT in Google Hangout to talk about their sessions and take questions from interested participants.

Venue was to be decided, and turned out to be Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ and Elluminate: http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/, all skillfully juggled by master wizard behind the curtain Jeff Lebow.

Ten people at a time can be in a Hangout, but the event was streamed so that anyone could listen to the stream while it was being broadcast or later via the recording.  The stream bounced in and out of Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ, and  Elluminate, where people met up to speak about their sessions and get help if they were having trouble with Google Hangout.

View on screencast.com »

Participants had these instructions:

  • The stream URL or widget will appear at http://webheadsinaction.org/. There is also a text chat there.  You can visit there now to see last year’s example.
  • Anyone wishing to comment on the stream, or get help with Hangout can come to http://webheadsinaction.org/ and use the text chat there, or visit http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/ for text and possibly voice chat.
  • The URL for the hangout will be available in those places and will be revealed at launch time.

Recordings:

What we planned would happen on Sunday

13:00 GMT, Jeff will start the hangout and we’ll start posting it’s URL wherever we can think of

13:30 (all times GMT) we’ll start gathering in the Hangout for mic checks and whatnot

 – Jeff will set up the stream and we’ll check that it works

 – Jeff will plant his audiobot in the Webheads Elluminate room so that the stream can be heard there

14:00 Jeff starts recording what’s going on in the Hangout

 – Those in the hangout can interact with us via voice and video (or avatar if it’s too early for that for you 🙂

 – Those listening to the stream at http://webheadsinaction.org/live can interact in text chat there

 – Those in Elluminate can hear the stream and interact in txt chat there, but the audiobot will have the mic

15:00 apprx we assess whether to continue in Hangout or move the show over to Elluminate

 – Jeff’s audiobot in Elluminate will release the mic and feed what is happening there to the stream

 – Participants in Elluminate can interact in audio and txt chat

 – Those in the stream at http://webheadsinaction.org/live can listen only but interact in text chat there

16:00 is Jeff’s bedtime and Vance’s dinnertime

Some caveats:

 – It might be best if all participants try to txt chat in the stream while the Hangout is in progress.  Txt chat in Elluminate is not visible to the stream chat and visa versa

 – If you are listening to the stream and then join the hangout or Elluminate room, mute the stream to avoid double audio

 – If planning to speak in the Hangout, please use a headset to avoid echo.  Jeff is a notorious audio stickler and will mute any echomongers 🙂 but you’ll be invited to resolve the problem and return.

– It will be easier for Jeff to bring you into the Hangout if you will visit http://plus.google.com and bring up your profile

 – In order to help with planning, Jeff thinks “it would be lovely if mods could use the doc below to arrange a tentative speaking schedule”

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YXrrCeeOgyZUOv3YFLO1f8pUIFNyab-OG8LUJbCPny0/edit
