The Minecraft Monday event this month (Tuesday on the side of the world where I live) was quite interesting. It was a lesson in using maps to find your way in world. About of dozen of us convened in creative mode on the VSTE server where we were given a mission briefing using slides posted in Discord chat, an excellent illustration of how Discord can serve as a content resource for learning experiences crafted in Minecraft.
These slides basically showed those present how to bring up the coordinates of where they were exactly on their Minecraft server, and see which way they were heading in the Minecraft HUD (heads up display). They then showed what a map looks like and how to find youself on it, presented an explanation of how the XYZ coordinate system works in Minecraft, and finally explained how to get maps from cartographers in villages. It was apparently by trading for such a map that Jaz and K4 were able to discover the location of a Woodland Mansion, make copies of the map, and leave the copies in a chest in survival mode, showing where the Woodland Mansion was.
Having received our briefing, we warped over to survival where we found the chest at our arrival point. Opening it we each took a diamond sword and a map, plus bundles of torches and baked potatoes. Armed with knowledge of orienteering in Minecraft, we would use the map to navigate to the Woodland Mansion. Armed with diamond swords we would fend off any mobs encountered, the torches would help us light up dark places where mobs congregate, and potatoes would sustain us in our journey. I looked around for ketchup but I didn’t see any.
According to a Google search on Woodland Mansions, they occur only in dark forest biomes. So we were on the edge of a dark forest and would have to penetrate it in order to cross from the top right of the map to the bottom left where the mansion appeared as a structure-like icon. The vegetation in dark forests is so thick that we could start out by hopping treetop to treetop. But once you fell to the forest floor you could hardly see and had to put the diamond sword to use slashing foliage. But on the map we could see where there were rivers and if you found one of those you could swim down it and work your way closer to the mansion.
Suffice it to say they would be lethal. I see Dak went inside and encounted a Vindicator illager
Having found the place, Jaz made us weightless so we could fly around and look in the windows. The picture above was taken as I peered into all the windows.
Here are some more shots of the interiors
When I was killed later by a common zombie I discovered that this server had a /back command which would return you to your point of demise. I also discovered when I was slain that I respawned at the mansion. Interesting. I took a picture of its coordinates, but having a spawn point there would allow me to commit suicide on a later visit to this server and then revisit the mansion.
But I wouldn’t want to do that without permission or experienced companions, as that would spoil it. The reason they didn’t want us newbies going inside is probably that they want to systematically approach such places and mount an expedition that would lead the explorers to its treasures. But once they had neutralized the mobs the place would be only a giant house in the woods, nothing particularly useful or challenging. There’s one on the EVO Minecraft server in the vicinity of the 2019 spawn point (or was it 2018, the one where Dak built a huge boat). But it no longer contains any traps or surprises or treasures or its unique variety of guardian monsters.
When the sun went down, we were teleported to the village where the cartographer and other villagers lived in safety, since a huge wall had been erected around it, and golems employed to patrol the area. In the picture below, I’ve just arrived at the village, still carrying my map.
Still able to fly, I rise up to get a better overview …
Here are Jazmar and K4sons at the village …
Some of the villages seemed a little intoxicated (purple bubbles). If you right click on them you find that many have items to trade, as in the menu here:
There was a whirring sawmill blade. I asked what would happen if I stood on it. I was encouraged to try it and see. Nothing happened. In the next picture a golem is standing on it.
This was where Minecraft Monday ended, and some of the teachers there went off to meet their students online, which they apparently did in the evenings in this time of IsolatioN. But Jaz and K4 and I stayed around to see how Minecraft would behave when observed through a shared screen in Zoom. We wanted to test that because we would be giving a performance (not a presentation, that word causes anxiety) at the 2-day Virtual Round Table conference May 8 and 9, http://virtual-round-table.ning.com/
So we experimented with the screen share and I made a recording in Zoom. In the recording you can see the village at night where the villagers were mostly sleeping but the golems were on patrol, and we ventured outside the gate to attract some zombies. That may have been unnecessary since inside the compound at night, phantom birds attacked, and the movie has footage of K4 dispatching them with her enchanted bow (the kind that fires unlimited times with only a single arrow in your quiver, as long as you keep up the enchantment). K4 got a couple of them, it appears.

I experienced difficulties while attending this. Music was played while we were waiting for the event to begin and the music kept disconnecting and reconnecting, same with sound quality when the event began. I found it very difficult to manipulate the text chat window due to lag. The even was scheduled up to midnight where I am, so I am very pleased to find there is a recording, here:
If you were not registered for the event it might be impossible to see the recording (at either link) since both require a login and the registration deadline was April 30.

The original Webheads weekly meetings used to be held regularly for the first decade of this century in various online spaces, many archived here http://prosites-vstevens.homestead.com/files/efi/chatlogs.htm, traditionally at noon UTC on Sundays. These started out being meetings of Writing for Webheads, a precursor MOOC for people worldwide who wanted to improve their English in conversation and other interactions with native speakers. After Webheads in Action was formed in 2002, the meetings were mostly attended by teachers and educational technology specialists, and others who considered themselves in the process of becoming a community of practice.
Webheads never disbanded, though we did lie fallow for some time. When COVID-19 provoked us into moving online to a greater degree than in the interim, and at the instigaton of Webheads co-founder Michael Coghlan, we regrouped in the current format, falling eventually into the original time frame. This post archives the Sunday May 3 Noon UTC the Regular Weekly Webheads Revival Meeting #6, which was also Teaching and Learning in IsolatioN TALIN event 13, as well as Learning2gether episode 456
In these meetings we gather in Zoom to talk about Life in the Time of COVID-19. It’s an opportunity for virtual friends and colleagues to spend some time together and talk about how we’re spending our lockdown days, or anything else that may be on our minds. As with our original meetings, agendas are rarely set beforehand. It’s open mic; our meetings tend to be free-form and are tailored to the interests of whomever turns up. (But of course, if anyone wants to suggest an agenda in advance, they are welcome to do so.)

The idea for TALIN was prompted by suggestions in numerous cross-fertilizing communities of practice that there was needed a space where members of these CoPs could meet online and talk informally to one another about how they are dealing with changes in their personal and professional contexts and what they are doing to help others in this trying time of pandemic.
Learning2gether can host TALIN events in Zoom during times of isolation/lockdown if they are intended to be recorded and shared with the wider community, and if they take place between 02:00-14:00 UTC
TALIN events here are open to all and free to attend. If you would like to propose an event or invite others to meet in conversation
Click on “Request Edit Access” to the left of your profile picture at the top of the page
Wait for approval
Write in your event on the schedule. Give the time in UTC if you can, and give the time in your location also as a double check on time
You can host the event yourself, but if you want Learning2gether to host it and promote it, please allow enough time to check that I am available, at least a few days in advance.

Thu 30 Apr 1900 UTC – British Council / Graham Stanley, Remote Teaching: A Survival Guide for Schoolteachers
Schools all over the Americas, and indeed the world, are becoming more creative in developing solutions to keep students learning amid multiple school closures and the general disruption caused by Covid-19. In Uruguay, the British Council has been working in partnership with Plan Ceibal to cater for the lack of trained and qualified English language teachers in the country, project managing the remote teaching of 80,000 primary schoolchildren aged 8- 11. During the last 5 years, we have learned a lot about what makes a good remote teacher, and in this webinar, we’ll look at how best teachers can adapt to the new situation they now find themselves in.
I haven’t seen a recording but Graham (who was present at the Sunday May 3 Webheads Revival Meeting #6) tells me “Actually, they were all a variation on this one really: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtRkk6ml4hw&t=1s
Graham continues, “That one had a bit about using green screens in zoom and the other ones were without that and a more expanded section at the beginning”

On April 28, 2020, Rita Zeinstejer introduced the topic of Jing: useful tool to record videos or images from your desktop. Now what?
When Adobe retires Flash at the end of 2020, Jing’s current video format .swf will no longer be supported by web browsers. Therefore, which tool can replace Jing as a free image capture and video recorder tool with capabililty of either saving to disc or upload of capture to the Web for immediate sharing? In this webinar Rita Zeinstejer discusses the issue with Webheads in Action, TALIN, and Learning2gether to share knowledge with us on this question that many of us will soon have to face.

21:02:59 From Nina Liakos : I wonder where the money will come from. Whole countries could go bankrupt. Mitch McConnell thinks it’s OK for states to do so. So where would countries get the $ for UBI? If they just print money, wouldn’t that spur inflation?
21:03:48 From Michael Coghlan : Nina – it may only work in economoies that already pay put a great deal in unemployment beefits
21:04:20 From Michael Coghlan : For thiose economies a UBI is apparently cheaper
21:04:20 From Steve : If people are out of work, they don’t pay taxes. If they have UBI they spend money, generate tax revenue. That helps pay for it. I’m not an expert, which is why I shared the Andrew Yang site.
21:05:08 From Heike Philp : great input Steve, these are the arguments
21:05:45 From Heike Philp : and the biggest issue is: will people continue to work if they dont have to
21:06:31 From Doris Molero : Sus Nyrop It was great. Very encouraging to be together. Unfortunately I had a computer breakdown on my very fragile and old Mac, I am at the Point where I have to consider the tedious process of a total cleanup reinstall… See you next time.
21:06:40 From Michael Coghlan : Time for me to go – goodnight from down here 😉
21:06:41 From Steve : Are any of you using Microsoft TEAMS?
21:06:59 From Nina Liakos : I think may people would work at what they love (art, music, public service…) when if they had to earn a living they would not be able to
21:07:13 From Daf : night, Michael!
21:07:30 From Elizabeth A : houseparty
21:07:48 From Chris Fry : time to go for me,too but to have lunch! Bye everybody
21:08:04 From Daf : bye Chris
21:09:18 From Jane Petring : It was good to see all of you! I need to go as well!
21:09:27 From Teresa : bye Jane!
21:09:37 From Elizabeth A : bye Jane
21:10:11 From Heike Philp : Are you using Classroom Onenote?
21:13:55 From Steve : It was great to reconnect with all of you today. Dan Bassill Good bye for this week.
21:14:42 From Daf : bye bye guys, see you next week!
More about TALIN
This was Learning2gether episode 454 and TALIN event #11
The idea for TALIN was prompted by suggestions in numerous cross-fertilizing communities of practice that there was needed a space where members of these CoPs could meet online and talk informally to one another about how they are dealing with changes in their personal and professional contexts and what they are doing to help others in this trying time of pandemic.
Learning2gether can host TALIN events in Zoom during times of isolation/lockdown if they are intended to be recorded and shared with the wider community, and if they take place between 02:00-14:00 UTC

The date of this update is April 27, 2020 05:30 UTC
April 21-22, 2020, was a dynamic two days in this season of coming to grips with while avoiding catching COVID-19. It seems that there are online events happening all the time. In this period there were several but this week I particularly marked in my calendar two of them. Both were recorded.
The first was a webinar by Joe Dale. I met Joe Dale, and Nik Peachey as well, at the aPLaNet conference in 2012 at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey,. Since then I have blogged two of his webinars as
Episode 272: Thursday, May 7, 2015 – Learning2gether joined Juergen Wagner‘s event with Joe Dale – Planning a virtual field trip to New Orleans
The AppSmashing event was particularly memorable, and as you can see from the links above, both were replete with resources, well documented, hands-on, and meaty (Joe typically goes on for 90 minutes). Joe models an approach to engaging a distant audience by keeping them informatively entertained and busy with learning new tools for learning through technology. He is interactive with his online audiences and engages them via the text chats. He knows what he is doing and doesn’t mind the occasional glitch as he works through each hiccup. He is an skilled edutainer.
This is his profession; he performs for a fee but he leaves his work openly online for the benefit of others. I do the same, but my work is not in any kind of conflict with any paid practice. I used to tell people that working for free and gaining a reputation for quality of output was how I could be sure of getting my next paid job. I think Joe feels the same way. Like music you hear for free on YouTube, if you like it, you, or others like you, are more likely to engage the professionals to perform at your event.
So I made an effort to archive this event similarly to the previous two in a kind of digital recollection. Incidentally I do these recollections primarily so that I can recapture my own learning, and only incidentally in order to share them with everyone else. Enjoy 🙂
Tue 21 April – British Council hosts Joe Dale – Having a play! Simple interactive activities for remote teaching
At 10.00 BST Tuesday 21st April 2020, Joe Dale will be giving a 90 minutes FREE @BritishCouncil webinar ‘Having a play! Simple interactive activities for remote teaching’ aimed at English language teachers from Indonesia but the ideas are replicable for any language. Over 600 people have signed up so far.
The first part of the agreement is for all participants to acknowledge that their participant names and comments in the chat might be visible to others. Regarding the second part, I wish BC wouldn’t force acceptance of promotional materials in exchange for their academic offering. There is an opt-out – the user can forego access to the material on offer. Perhaps a fairer choice to the question, “Would you be happy for us to contact you occasionally?” would be
[ ] happy [ ] not happy
In any event, I agreed to both terms, and in retrospect, it was worth it! I took meticulous notes, including links from the text chat. It’s easy in Zoom for each person to capture the chat by right clicking on the chat, click select all, then copy. You can keep hitting select all over and over again, more is captured each time, and eventually hit copy, then paste somewhere. I did this to capture the links and to convey a much redacted sense of how the audience was responding to working through Joe’s presentation of so many tools.
I captured the selfie above toward the end of Joe’s talk, and the screenshot below as he was getting set up. Joe had just mentioned that there were 400 people present in this Zoom webinar workshop.
Mentimeter
The first topic introduced was Mentimeter, one of many sites that poll participants and then represent their responses graphically. Here are excerpts from the Zoom chat chosen to give a flavor of how the participants were responding in the workshop.
From Ahmad Riza to Everyone: 05:15 PM I’ve never heard before about menti.com From Dina Iguna to Everyone: 05:16 PM Q: Does this have to be done synchronously? or can we set a range of time when the participants can respond? From WAWAN PRASETYO to Everyone: 05:16 PM we are only allowed to give three question? is it right? From Laely Hidayati to Everyone: 05:16 PM it works for students who don’t want to talk or raise hands 🙂 From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:16 PM @dina, better synhronously Mentimeter https://www.menti.com/nuznjg5ij2
When you visit that link you see …
Partipant responses can generate word clouds
or bar graphs
Particpants react (excerpted)

From Diane Kenworthy to Everyone: 05:17 PM Q can we share this video with our colleagues and if so how ? @Diane ask your colleagues to join by getting the ticket or later you can see the recorded video on iTELL YouTube Q: May I share this webinar for my gangs to join? Wakelet
The next tool Joe showed us was Wakelet. Wakelet is useful for crowd-sourcing information from multiple respondents. Teachers can set up “collections” and have their students add to them.
And the participants’ most relevant conversation around the activity:
From Me to Everyone: 05:23 PM like padlet? From Joe Dale to Everyone: 05:23 PM https://is.gd/TILTTHURSjoedale I put Joe’s link in my browser and the link returned Click the link if you’d like to proceed to the destination shown: – Vance https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CyCAO4T03ScPYzrsuyMOFktdodZ-a3h650oTT7Wm4qk From Me to Everyone: 05:24 PM with padlet you only get ONE for free now From Yuni Ifayati to Everyone: 05:25 PM oya? i think it is three pages for free From Dina Iguna to Everyone: 05:25 PM Q: I tried wakelet (thanks to Ms Finita’s webinar the other day) for work submission, but one post can only include 1 pic or 1 link? can we ask ss to post series of pics, like for showing process? From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:26 PM @Dina, one post one link 🙂 From Dina Iguna to Everyone: 05:26 PM Ms @Finita, any other suggested app for series of photo per post? Thanks 🙂
From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:27 PM @dina, photo story From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:26 PM @Ana, padlet is like virtual/digital sticky notes, where you or your students can post text/url/video/pics and give comments on the posts From Guiomar Mancho to Everyone: 05:27 PM Collaborators can now create subcollections so they can share with you an entire load of work if you want From RIZQI AMALIA RAMADHANI to Everyone: 05:27 PM We probs need a weekly discussion on [tool a] vs [tool b], if it’s not already covered by the internet like WAKELET vs PADLET; ZOOM vs WEBEX; JAMBOARD vs PADLET; iOS vs Android From Dina Iguna to Everyone: 05:28 PM Okay, I’ll check Photo Story out, thanks Ms @Finita. is it also easy to use, just by sharing link/code? From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:28 PM @yohana, no need… they can access padlet thorugh the link that you provide From Fernalia Kerukaspari to Everyone: 05:28 PM Wakelet’s UI reminds me of tumblr hehe. Cool, okay. This will be easy enough for me to figure out. From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:28 PM @yohana, so easy. even kids can do tthat 🙂 From Dewi Andrianie to Everyone: 05:29 PM interesting! From RIZQI AMALIA RAMADHANI to Everyone: 05:29 PM Google Keep has been my go to junkyard of LINKS and whatnots From Mochamad Fitriadi to Everyone: 05:30 PM is it like google classroom? From Daniela Bunea to Everyone: 05:30 PM is Wakelet similar to Diigo? I remember Diigo… From Joe Dale to Everyone: 05:31 PM 7f936ab From Finita Dewi to Everyone: 05:32 PM there are some similarities and differences among tech tools, don’t worry about comparing them. just pick tools which you think can support your teaching 🙂 From Bitadwi Rahmani to Everyone: 05:32 PM wakelet seems like Google classroom and or Edmodo, isn’t it From RIZQI AMALIA RAMADHANI to Everyone: 05:33 PM Edmodo is more like Facebook methinks From Rachel Applwby to Everyone: 05:33 PM LOVE this – thank you 🙂 From Lany Rohmaniah to Everyone: 05:34 PM it works on android! yieeyyy From Stephanie Ellis-Williams to Everyone: 05:34 PM Q- How can I access it again, in a few weeks’ time? From Eduardus Erwan Nugroho to Everyone: 05:41 PM Q: is it completely free? From Grace Sabandar to Everyone: 05:41 PM @Eduardus: yes
Then Joe segued us into the next adventure, Whiteboard.fi. But first, he grabbed a reader off the web, https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/my-sea-creature, and showed us an exercise where we had to read a poem about oceans and then write down the number of sea creatures we found (multiple choice) – then read it again and this time write down the number of fishes (is a whale a fish? what about a jellyfish?).
Joe opened a workspace for us and instructed us each, all 400 of us, to go to our individual workspaces at https://whiteboard.fi/y4y / and draw a shark there. Here’s mine, and below my drawing you can find exerpts from the text chat.

From Elisabeth Schaludek-Paletschek to Everyone: 06:04 PM Q Can I use Seesaw for screencasting if I want to give feedback to a student’s work?
As the screenshot above shows (taken from my computer) some of these apps were overwhelming bandwidth with the app server suddenly being hit by 400 simultaneous users. A lot of the comments in the chat were about audio issues. Some lucky ones had good audio and were able to join the excercise, but others had echoing audio, couldn’t hear the audio, or as in my case, couldn’t reach the app at all. I’ve removed these comments from the transcripts to mitigate bloat.

Socrative
At this point in the webinar, some participants said they needed to leave and excused themselves, heaping praise on Joe for his efforts. Much of this has been redacted.
Socrative has a teacher and student logon. When you go to Socrative.com and click Login, https://socrative.com/#login, you are asked to login as either as student or teacher
If you are a teacher, you will log in to your account, where you can create activities. However, students are asked to log in with the number of the room the teacher has created for them where they can unlock the activity. In this way, students don’t need to have an account here to use the teacher’s activities; teachers create activities under their accounts and share their room numbers with their students. Students don’t need to create accounts here at all.
So Joe began by sharing with us his room number …

QUICK VIEW (Times are US Eastern Daylight Time)
I (Vance) was really looking forward to this conference. However the times EDT are 12 hours reversed from where I am in Malaysia, so when it began on April 22 at 10 am EDT, this was 10 pm for me. I knew I’d be able to see the recordings, so I caught the opening presentation by Candy Mowen at that time, went to bed, and woke up next day in time to catch the late evening presentations that must have taken place after a dinner break from 6 to 8 in the USA. The following are my impressions of the events I attended.
Engaging Online Learners
Presenter: Candy Mowen
Here are the most important aspects of online engagement
7 strategies for engaging online learners:
I slept through these that follow but I look forward to seeing the recordings

Learning and Leading During Emergency Remote Teaching
Presenters: A.J. Juliani, Katie Novak, & George Couros
From one of George’s slides
“Learning for students, learning about students, learning from students”
This presentation was a plethora of ideas and inspirations. It started with George asking us, on a scale of memes, how are you feeling:
This resonated: Resiliance = bouncing forward:
Ten ideas to meaningfully connect via remote learning:
Kate was the next speaker. She distilled the idea of engaging learners through taking advantage of the personalized nature of the medium as opposed to having to meet them in a group at a certain time in a classroom by giving them options and choices. So if for your class you had decided to get them all to conceptualize a bowl of rice (analogically speaking), online you could widen the scope into a Dinner Party:
AJ hit the keynote “Give students a reason for learning virtually” followed by the reasons such as digital project, naural phenomenon, empathy, problem awareness, geeky interest, etc. I think the relevant list might be in AJ’s slides here https://event.webinarjam.com/replay/2/qp3xosmi6i1irv4o but it comes in the form of a broadcast, which was nice of him to share, but not easily searched or clicked through (classic example of linear vs. random access).
From Richard Churchill to Everyone: 08:49 AM This webinar is FIRE From Teresa Noverr to Everyone: 08:50 AM Absolutely LIT! Bring it OOONNNN From Kitty to Everyone: 08:50 AM Like a good book I am going to have to watch this a few time

Ten fantastic ideas for online teaching: Ditch that textbook
Presenters: Jon Corippo & Matt Miller and a merciless timekeeper

Guests are such a great way to shake it up. We’ve used that even in in-person format. We had someone from the State Department Skype in for a Q&A in a Public Archaeology class once. That was awesome.
Here the first speaker is abruptly cut short, by prearrangment, by the overly-assiduous timekeeper-from-hell 🙂
From Helaine Marshall to Everyone: 09:41 AM OUCH!! From Peggy George to Everyone: 09:42 AM hahaha!!!! From Helaine Marshall to Everyone: 09:43 AM 2-minute warning won’t work since that is the entire allotted time!!!

This “fight club” format may be fun for you but it is cutting out good info. What is the tip about recording on slower resolution? Will slides and notes be shared? From Teresa Noverr to Everyone: 09:48 AM WE have to use google meet. Yawn From Heather Kelly to Everyone: 09:49 AM We use Google Meet and with use of meeting codes, you can give students the code ahead of time. They can’t login to the meeting until you as the host have started the meeting. It’s also specific just to people within your school. You can also reuse the meeting codes simply by making sure that you are the last one to leave the meeting.
From Peggy George to Everyone: 09:49 AM Flip Hunt is a really fun idea!

More about TALIN
This was Learning2gether episode 453 (because I attended and reported on these webinars) but it was not a TALIN event per se.
Then why would you, dear reader, want to know about TALIN?
The idea for TALIN was prompted by suggestions in numerous cross-fertilizing communities of practice that there was needed a space where members of these CoPs could meet online and talk informally to one another about how they are dealing with changes in their personal and professional contexts and what they are doing to help others in this trying time of pandemic.
So that’s why, being at home like most of us, so many of us are attending these webinars at this particular time. There are so many familiar names and faces in these events.
In fact, TALIN is trying to encourage events of this nature, so readers here are invited to visit our website and engage the rest of us with whatever expertise you can provide, or want to know about (because if you have questions, someone among us has answers 🙂
Learning2gether can host TALIN events in Zoom during times of isolation/lockdown if they are intended to be recorded and shared with the wider community, and if they take place between 02:00-14:00 UTC
Hope to see you all frequently online as we pass our days of lockdown as constructively as possible.
Earlier Events
Tue 21 Apr 1400 UTC Carla Arena on Simplifica – Nation-Wide Learning Experiences for Brazilian Students at home
These other two weren’t the only webinars I attended on these days. Here are some screenshots I made while watching Dr. Jared Borup give advice on Forming Online Communities while Apart.
Don’t try to be purr-fect …
Adapt – One of Jared’s colleagues provided a shot of her setup while conducting an online class from home.
Eventually you can improve your home setup. Here are shots of a more carefully planned home studio.
Dr. Borup concludes with videos covering a spectrum of his work online shot through the https://www.EdConnect.app/
Next it was Dr. Joan Kang’s turn to talk about props for online classrooms.
She advises: start with what you have:
Here she is conducting a treasure hunt at her home, armed with a hopper.
Wed 22 Apr 1800 UTC – Dave Cormier and Bonnie Stewart are giving webinars on tools for online learning
In describing his week-longteacher-training courses for colleagues in Canada, Dave provides copious resources (slides, videos).
“Key outcome – They got it. In one week people went from being nervous, sure they were going to do 2 hour live lectures every week and thinking they wanted to make the machine go PING! to thinking about how they could have a great class online. Like they really got it. We treated them like smart people, told them they were going to have to figure out the tech, supported them as much as we possible could and talked all day about pedagogies of care… and they got it.”
With Dave as their guide, how could they not get it?
The second and third webinars will take a sharper look at the tools available for students according to their age and grade. Those sessions will also offer teachers the opportunity to ask questions through the chat room
and since the sessions are recorded they’ll be made available afterwards.
According to the article these events are at 2 a.m. where I am, but if you want to register, try these links
Previously, there must have been a Webinar 1, and then

On Tue Apr 21, 1400 UTC, Carla Arena presented in the TALIN2020 Zoom room on Amplifica – Nation-Wide Learning Experiences for Brazilian Students at home – a national project in Brazil to provide content for k-9 students plus help educators develop professionally.
This was incorrect — actually Learning2gether episode 452 and TALIN webinar #10 🙂
The name Simplifica was also incorrect. I remember at the time that I was googling it and and asking Carla for it’s link, but we missed on reconciling the name of the organization before, during, or after her presentation, when I created this post.
Now, August 15, 2020, Carla has posted about the 5th anniversary of AMPLIFICA
So I’ve gone back and corrected the name everywhere I could find it 🙂

Sun 19 April noon UTC Barbara Dieu, Michael Coghlan and Vance Stevens host weekly Webeads in Action – TALIN hangout meeting

Getting back to Sundays, noon GMT, right where we started 20 years ago, on 19 April Barbara Dieu, Michael Coghlan and Vance Stevens hosted yet another weekly Webeads in Action – TALIN hangout meeting – yet another meeting in the TALIN2020 Zoom room where we gather to talk about Life in the Time of COVID 19 and take an opportunity to spend some time together and talk about how we’re spending our lockdown days. Or anything else that may be on your mind :), as Michael puts it.
As it turned out, we ended up by talking about some of the finer points of using Zoom. We shared numerous tips on apps to use with students when teaching onlline, and you can find these in the text chat below. Laine shared her personal list of Zoom keyboard shortcuts from her Google Drive and a video of how to assign a co-host (in the chat) and Nahir walked us through using the shared whiteboard (lacks a way to insert images it turns out). If you’re looking for such tips, you’ll find it valuable to replay the video.
The meeting today was attended by, in the order of appearance in the video, Barbara Dieu or Bee as we affectionately know her, Vance and Bobbi Stevens, Michael Coghlan, Sus Nyrop, Laine Marshall, Doris Molero, Daf (Dafne Gonzalez), Nina Liakos, Lorena Zurbano, Rita Zeinstejer, and Nahir Aparicio, with Chris Fry and Michael Birch appearing in the text chat, the latter to inform us that we were competing with Adrian Underhill in the IATEFL Global Get-together, which was at that moment in its second day of broadcast.
Michael Birch made the right choice. I assumed that if you missed one, you should be able to find a recording of the other, but looking for the IATEFL event recordings I found this notice on the IATEFL website: Members of IATEFL will have access to the recordings of these sessions after the event, by logging into the ‘My Resources‘ section of the IATEFL website
This was the 4th of our resurrected Webheads in Action weekly meetings, to revive those that were held regularly for the first decade of this century in various online spaces, traditionally at noon UTC on Sundays.
These meetings tend to be free-form and are tailored to the interests of whomever turns up, unless someone sets an agenda beforehand

Laine Marshall presented this webinar in Zoom on
SOFLA, Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach
“for Webheads and everyone else….” on Tuesday, April 14, 1400 UTC (10 am in NY)
In her announcement, she included this
IMPORTANT NOTE: Pre-Work – This is Flipped PD, so there are a few short tasks to complete prior to the session. It won’t take long and it will make the session more enjoyable for you and for the group!
SOFLA Model: Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (Marshall, 2017). most closely replicates actual classroom teaching and provides dynamic, interactive, spaces both asynchronously and synchronously to create fertile spaces for learning. The presenter takes the group through the eight steps of the model, which are presented for both teachers and professional developers: (1) Pre-Work; (2) Sign-in Activity; (3) Whole Group Application; (4) Breakout Group Activities; (5) Share-out Time; (6) Preview and Discovery; (7) Assignment/Follow-up; and (8) Reflections.
The last step in the SOFLA model is Reflection:
Use this link to reflect on your experience in the SOFLA session. This provides wrap-up for you and feedback for me!
This event was webinar #8 organized through TALIN – Teaching and Learning in IsolatioN https://tinyurl.com/talin2020

Join us for another Zoom meeting where we to talk about Life in the Time of COVID 19 – an opportunity to spend some time together and talk about how you’re spending your lockdown days. Or anything else that may be on your mind 🙂
This is the 3rd of what we hope will become a revival of the regular Webheads in Action weekly meetings that were held regularly for the first decade of this century in various online spaces, traditionally at noon UTC on Sundays.
These meetings tend to be free-form and are tailored to the interests of whomever turns up, unless someone sets an agenda beforehand
When? Monday, April 13th at Noon UTC
Where? Vance’s TALIN2020 Zoom room There were at least 14 participants present
In the video, I mentioned that there had been a change to the TALIN Google Doc and Facebook pages, but no one could tell me what it was. Maybe my cat knows …
We needed a logo , so my cat made one for me. He did a good job, but now I can’t find my mouse !! 🙂
Learning2gether can host TALIN events in Zoom during times of isolation/lockdown if they are intended to be recorded and shared with the wider community, and if they take place between 02:00-14:00 UTC

Write in your event on the schedule. Give the time in UTC if you can, and give the time in your location also as a double check on time

Fri 10 Apr 1400 UTC Susana Canelo on TALIN talking about Quarantine Experiences
Fri 10 Apr 1600 UTC – NileTESOL TESG webinar on Teaching and Developing Speaking Skills
TESIG would like to invite you to their first online live event on Zoom application that will take place on Friday, April 10th at 6:00 p.m. The event includes three informative and engaging sessions which will help you teach speaking virtually and online in this hectic time.
The sessions will be recorded and you will not miss anything.
Susana Canelo proposed this Zoom meeting to share “Quarantine experiences, teen students in Argentina and Webheads – How a class opened up to the world to make everyone feel that we are in the same boat.”
She was joined in this event by Vance Stevens and Buthaina Alothman. and was planning to share the story behind her recent meeting with Webheads in Action: Buthaina, Ibrahim, Ramona and Bahana
The meeting was held in Susana’s Zoom Room, giving Vance permisson to record on Fri Apr 10 – 11:00 a.m. in Buenos Aires, 14:00 UTC
And here is Susana’s version of the event on Vimeo, https://vimeo.com/406616725. Hers might be a little different from mine (Vance’s) since she was the host of the event, and I was recording what I saw in my view of the Zoom event.
Thu 9 April 11a.m. in Columbia – Martha Ramirez on Polleverywhere
I saw this on the morning of April 10 in Penang Malaysia. It was posted yesterday in Colombia but I’m not sure when that would have been since it’s was still yesterday in Colombia when I saw it just now. It says the event is tomorrow. Let’s check the video link
Martha’s presentation on Polleverywhere starts at 2:05:17… it’s in Spanish 🙂 and it was at first not permissible for embedding: https://youtu.be/5KNtoGCrhhQ?t=7517
but that appears to have changed, so here it is:
Here’s another one by the prolific Martha Ramirez, posted on Facebook April 17, 2020
