Jeff Lebow converges Hangout, Second Life, Elluminate, and WiZiQ for the EVO 2013 (Electronic Village Online) Mega-Launch

Hangout recording

What was this about?

This is an annual EVO event where moderators for the EVO sessions listed at http://evosessions.pbworks.com meet from noon GMT in Google Hangout to talk about their sessions and take questions from interested participants.

Venue was to be decided, and turned out to be Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ and Elluminate: http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/, all skillfully juggled by master wizard behind the curtain Jeff Lebow.

Ten people at a time can be in a Hangout, but the event was streamed so that anyone could listen to the stream while it was being broadcast or later via the recording.  The stream bounced in and out of Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ, and  Elluminate, where people met up to speak about their sessions and get help if they were having trouble with Google Hangout.

Participants had these instructions:

  • The stream URL or widget will appear at http://webheadsinaction.org/. There is also a text chat there.  You can visit there now to see last year’s example.
  • Anyone wishing to comment on the stream, or get help with Hangout can come to http://webheadsinaction.org/ and use the text chat there, or visit http://learningtimesevents.org/webheads/ for text and possibly voice chat.
  • The URL for the hangout will be available in those places and will be revealed at launch time.

Recordings:

What we planned would happen on Sunday

13:00 GMT, Jeff will start the hangout and we’ll start posting it’s URL wherever we can think of

13:30 (all times GMT) we’ll start gathering in the Hangout for mic checks and whatnot

 – Jeff will set up the stream and we’ll check that it works

 – Jeff will plant his audiobot in the Webheads Elluminate room so that the stream can be heard there

14:00 Jeff starts recording what’s going on in the Hangout

 – Those in the hangout can interact with us via voice and video (or avatar if it’s too early for that for you 🙂

 – Those listening to the stream at http://webheadsinaction.org/live can interact in text chat there

 – Those in Elluminate can hear the stream and interact in txt chat there, but the audiobot will have the mic

15:00 apprx we assess whether to continue in Hangout or move the show over to Elluminate

 – Jeff’s audiobot in Elluminate will release the mic and feed what is happening there to the stream

 – Participants in Elluminate can interact in audio and txt chat

 – Those in the stream at http://webheadsinaction.org/live can listen only but interact in text chat there

16:00 is Jeff’s bedtime and Vance’s dinnertime

Some caveats:

 – It might be best if all participants try to txt chat in the stream while the Hangout is in progress.  Txt chat in Elluminate is not visible to the stream chat and visa versa

 – If you are listening to the stream and then join the hangout or Elluminate room, mute the stream to avoid double audio

 – If planning to speak in the Hangout, please use a headset to avoid echo.  Jeff is a notorious audio stickler and will mute any echomongers 🙂 but you’ll be invited to resolve the problem and return.

– It will be easier for Jeff to bring you into the Hangout if you will visit http://plus.google.com and bring up your profile

 – In order to help with planning, Jeff thinks “it would be lovely if mods could use the doc below to arrange a tentative speaking schedule”

Vance Stevens, Ana Cristina Pratas, Claire Siskin discuss: What’s a MultiMOOC?

View on screencast.com »

MultiMOOC is one of the sessions at the annual EVO Electronic Village Online event starting next week.

The call for participation at http://evosessions.pbworks.com/w/page/61742103/Call_for_Participation2013

links to http://evosessions.pbworks.com/w/page/61739966/2013Multiliteracies

where it says that:

MultiMOOC “applies connectivist and multiliteracies approaches to exploring recent developments and issues in open learning, and how these might apply to more conventional settings.  The session is paced on Cormier’s 5 stages of MOOC participation: orient, declare, network, cluster, focus. Participants declare their personal goals for the course and trace their progress through eportfolios, either simple or elaborate. Any reasonable level of participation earns a badge in the course.”

In this recording, one of the moderators of the MultiMOOC session discusses with participants Nina, Susanna, and Lada how this session departs from others and why we call it a MOOC.

Jozef Colpaert – OERs for language learning and teaching: why do teachers have mixed feelings?

Jozef

This presentation was planned as an open and unscripted discussion of the results of a Worldwide OER survey conducted earlier this year, presented at the EuroCALL CMC & teacher Education SIG workshop in Bologna, and at CALICO 2012 in South Bend.

Participants were asked to read the following workshop paper

http://eurocallsigsbologna.weebly.com/uploads/8/7/4/5/8745414/colpaert_bologna_2012_eurocall.pdf

Participants were asked to discuss the following kinds of issues:

  • epistemological (what do we mean by Open? what should be Open?),
  • technological (what do we need to make this work?),
  • psychological (what are the psychological barriers for teachers?)
  • and juridical issues (who is going to profit from my work?)

Developing Technology-Infused Culture-Teaching Materials for ESL

Derya3

How can we promote the creation and distribution of culture-integrated ESL materials that serve for intercultural competence in a way that also helps teachers’ confidence and ability in developing teaching materials by integrating technology and computers? In this presentation I will share a project that I implement in a graduate level course, named Cross-Cultural Issues in ESL, at the University of South Florida, for future ESL teachers where they create their own technology-infused culture teaching materials for ESL learners by incorporating cultural practices and products from non-target cultures. Such a project helps develop their technological pedagogical content knowledge as well as their skills and confidence in developing materials by integrating technology. We also compile those materials in a wiki named Teaching Culture as seen below, http://teachingculture.pbworks.com . I will share with you what we do, and how we do it, and students’ experiences and ideas about the project.

Nellie Deutsch on Mindful Living with Technology

Learning2gether Episode 130Nellie Deutsch Transformative Leadership

Nellie Deutsch is generally associated with EFL and educational technology. She is less known for her involvement in healthy living (nutrition), healing (distance healing with Reiki and herbs), sports (long distance running & swimming), and mindfulness practice. The session will be an informal discussion of Nellie’s experiences with mindfulness meditation practice, the Alexander technique, Reiki, and the Silva Method. Nellie decided to share her work on mindfulness and authenticity at a conference in October 2012. She co-presented a workshop on Mindfulness Practice and Leadership, gave a workshop on Authenticity and Leadership and led a mindfulness meditation practice at the Transformative Leadership conference in Virginia Beach organized by Atlantic University and the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment.

Heike Philp – Machinima in the ELT classroom and how to trigger your student’s imagination

Learning2gether Episode 129

Heike Philp gave a charming presentation recorded here, showing us what she and participants in her MachinEVO session (Machinima, EVO, Electronic Village Online) created during the 2012 rendition of MachinEVO, while Heike and her team were learning along with the participants. The session is being given again this year: http://machinevo.pbworks.com/

Virtual location of the presentation: http://lancelot.adobeconnect.com/sl

RECORDING (57min):  http://lancelot.adobeconnect.com/p2dgsv274gb/

A machinima is a video taken in a 3D environment or in our case on EduNation in Second Life. These lean productions are being produced by screen recording one’s desktop. No camera equipment is needed, no actors and filming is not hampered by weather. They provide a rich multi-media resource for our learners, when using empty speaking bubbles as prompts. In this case it is immaterial whether text chat or voice chat fills the gaps, as it is the imagination of our learners, which is being kindled. How easy is it to create such recordings? This is the theme of this talk during which Heike Philp will relate the ins and outs of creating machinima. She will also introduce an idea for an EU funded project CAMELOT.
Here are some examples of these type of machinima

http://machinevo.pbworks.com/w/page/48340927/Week%201%20TRAILER%20%20%209%20Jan%20-%2015%20Jan

Heike reproduced the list from the link above in a comment to this post.  Vance has brought some of these into the main post here.  Because Posterous creates embeds for links to YouTube videos, I want to do this a few at a time to make sure this page will continue to load smoothly in our browsers.

Claire Bradin Siskin – What’s with the WOW?

Learning2gether Episode 128

Sunday, November 18, 2012 – Claire Bradin Siskin – What’s with the WOW?

The ESL Writing Online Workshop (ESL-WOW) Project will soon be launched!

Claire Bradin Siskin describes this free resource, an online multimedia program designed to guide non-native speakers of English through each stage of the pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing processes:

  1. Getting Ready to Write
  2. Developing Your Ideas
  3. Revising Your Work
  4. Editing and Polishing.

ESL-WOW will be openly available to all individuals and educational institutions.

PowerPoint from session: whats_with_the_wow_11-18-12.ppt

Earlier today there was an

IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG webinar

Today’s seminar is with a group of four outstanding Australian educators, sharing how they set up a social network for teachers in their region: ‘Setting up a regional PLN on Twitter: AusELT’. In the webinar these educators will discuss Twitter and other online tools they are using to enhance this network.

This session will be particularly interesting to teachers who would like to set up their own local online networks at whatever level – at school level, city level, or even countrywide. The webinar will provide an excellent blueprint for how to seed and grow online networks for teachers.

More information about the webinar, including a link to check the time in your own country, the speakers’ bios, and a link to the webinar room (which will be live 30 mins before the event is due to start) are on the LT SIG website here:
