Heike Philp – Machinima in the ELT classroom and how to trigger your student’s imagination

Learning2gether Episode 129

Heike Philp gave a charming presentation recorded here, showing us what she and participants in her MachinEVO session (Machinima, EVO, Electronic Village Online) created during the 2012 rendition of MachinEVO, while Heike and her team were learning along with the participants. The session is being given again this year: http://machinevo.pbworks.com/

RECORDING (57min):  http://lancelot.adobeconnect.com/p2dgsv274gb/

A machinima is a video taken in a 3D environment or in our case on EduNation in Second Life. These lean productions are being produced by screen recording one’s desktop. No camera equipment is needed, no actors and filming is not hampered by weather. They provide a rich multi-media resource for our learners, when using empty speaking bubbles as prompts. In this case it is immaterial whether text chat or voice chat fills the gaps, as it is the imagination of our learners, which is being kindled. How easy is it to create such recordings? This is the theme of this talk during which Heike Philp will relate the ins and outs of creating machinima. She will also introduce an idea for an EU funded project CAMELOT.
Here are some examples of these type of machinima

Heike reproduced the list from the link above in a comment to this post.  Vance has brought some of these into the main post here.  Because Posterous creates embeds for links to YouTube videos, I want to do this a few at a time to make sure this page will continue to load smoothly in our browsers.

Claire Bradin Siskin – What’s with the WOW?

Learning2gether Episode 128

Sunday, November 18, 2012 – Claire Bradin Siskin – What’s with the WOW?

The ESL Writing Online Workshop (ESL-WOW) Project will soon be launched!

Claire Bradin Siskin describes this free resource, an online multimedia program designed to guide non-native speakers of English through each stage of the pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing processes:

  1. Getting Ready to Write
  2. Developing Your Ideas
  3. Revising Your Work
  4. Editing and Polishing.

ESL-WOW will be openly available to all individuals and educational institutions.

PowerPoint from session: whats_with_the_wow_11-18-12.ppt

Earlier today there was an

IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG webinar

Today’s seminar is with a group of four outstanding Australian educators, sharing how they set up a social network for teachers in their region: ‘Setting up a regional PLN on Twitter: AusELT’. In the webinar these educators will discuss Twitter and other online tools they are using to enhance this network.

This session will be particularly interesting to teachers who would like to set up their own local online networks at whatever level – at school level, city level, or even countrywide. The webinar will provide an excellent blueprint for how to seed and grow online networks for teachers.

More information about the webinar, including a link to check the time in your own country, the speakers’ bios, and a link to the webinar room (which will be live 30 mins before the event is due to start) are on the LT SIG website here:

Jonathan Finkelstein walks us through LearningTimes-Badgestack

Today  the LearningTimes team will discuss with us their new initiative http://badgestack.com

More information here http://www.learningtimes.com/news/badgestack-v2/

Jonathan Finkelstein will explore and unpack the need for digital badges and microcredentials in formal and informal learning settings, which Finkelstein is pioneering as part of major initiatives with groups such as the Smithsonian Institution, the New York City Department of Education, Yale University, WCET, and programs for schools, museums, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations across the globe. Finkelstein will share examples of new educational programs and online communities that leverage digital badges to build ongoing relationships with learners, foster engagement, and acknowledge learning that often goes unrewarded or unrecognized. Badges also help learners showcase discrete skills and competencies that have value in their current professional and social lives. We’ll look at how even formal educational programs can leverage the benefits of microcredentials.

34:23 – Graeme Hodgson [Brasilia]

children are naturally egocentric, aren’t they? We can use this to our/their advantage!

34:58 – Alan Miesch [Numazu, Japan]

I think it’s different with older children, though. Maybe they get too self-conscious to talk about themselves?

35:15 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

interesting term… recycling language 🙂

35:15 – Gilmar Mattos [Franca-SP-Brazil]

true Alan

35:22 – Graeme Hodgson [Brasilia]

actually… this is also about another person, not strictly their own preferences… so could avoid shyness.

35:30 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

If they have to talk about themselves they’ll always raise their hands to volunteer

35:32 – Isabela Villas Boas [Brasilia]

Emerging discourse in English. Great.

1:36:40 – Vance Stevens [Abu Dhabi]

There are good presentations on K12 online on just this topic, language learning thru art

1:36:41 – Roseli Serra [Recife]

Different levels

1:36:51 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

art with teens and children

1:36:52 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

with postgradiuate courses, too

1:37:28 – David [Goiania]

if you consider song lyrics to be poetry we use poetry more than we realise

1:37:41 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

good point David

1:37:45 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Of course they are poetry! But sometimes not very good poetry…

1:37:47 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

sure! for me lyrics are poetry, too!

1:38:26 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

well, this happens with authentic material. You have to select mat.

1:38:31 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

Certainly.

1:38:42 – Roseli Serra [Recife]

Agreed , Stella!

1:38:43 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Someone said don’t choose something you really love because students will ruin it for you haha

1:38:50 – Emi Rowan [Osaka]

I use chats with jazz sometimes

1:40:13 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

suitability is essential!

1:40:38 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

maybe a good point about using art in class is that it allows several interpretations ,not only one type of answer

1:40:56 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Yes, the same is true of literature. There is no one right answer.

1:41:33 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Reading aloud allows us to work on pronunciation, stress, and intonation

1:41:37 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

this makes it trully communicative!

1:41:40 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

love the kind of language play that comes through poetry–don’t have to use complete sentences 🙂

1:42:32 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

engaging emotions makes learning much more memorable and long-lasting!

1:43:03 – Barbara Sakamoto [Japan]

I can really see students enjoying this!

1:43:10 – Nina Ridd [Brasilia]

There is a theorist who strongly made me believe in the power of performance (of both students and teachers) when dealing with poetry, his name is Paul Zumthor

1:43:14 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Yes, like appreciating jokes (beginners usually don’t)

1:43:16 – Miguel [Venezuela] 1

Jeremy Harmer gave a nice example on using poetry for drilling exercises. (Drilling equals repetition equals practice?)

1:43:19 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

Inspiring

1:43:30 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

inspiring

1:43:45 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

1:45:55 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

1:46:01 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

and they can relate to it immediately

1:46:02 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

sts can create more parts for these poemes

1:46:02 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

could substitute lots of roles into that poem 🙂

1:46:04 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

nice for teens and adults

1:46:15 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

That’s right, Viníius!

1:46:19 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

it touches them emotionally.

1:46:21 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

Good idea!

1:46:25 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

how they feel.

1:46:30 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

Wallace =)

1:46:37 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

I hope the teacher doesn’t actually say “shut up!”

1:46:57 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

unfortunately, Nina, some do…

1:47:03 – Gilmar Mattos [Franca-SP-Brazil]

reminds me of a song : The mom’s song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nem0bkErGVY

1:47:05 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

I guess that could be a teaching moment.

1:47:07 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

Nina a lot of teachers do.

1:47:11 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

me too Nina–but we know teachers are often trying to quiet the students

1:47:13 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Shame on them

1:47:24 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

really shame on them…

1:47:36 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

I stop the class if someone is not following it and wait.

1:48:17 – Mila Navarro [Goiania]

1:48:17 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

1:48:17 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

1:48:32 – Emi Rowan [Osaka]

lol

1:48:35 – Edmilson Chagas [Goiania, Brazil]

Beautiful!

1:48:41 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

We can also weave this to mLearning, what do you say, Viníius?

1:48:53 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

So cute!

1:48:54 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

And it shows how we prefer to ask over telling (at least when we are being polite)

1:48:55 – Nina Ridd [Brasilia]

nice!

1:49:37 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Valeria, what age group(s) do you work with?

1:49:42 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

nice

1:50:13 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

Valeria trains teachers nowadays, Nina, all over Brazil.

1:50:15 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

I love MICHAEL ROSEN!!

1:50:44 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

:0)

1:50:49 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Thx Carla

1:50:58 – Rose Bard [SC – Brazil]

never had the opportunity to see poems in this way, this sound nice.

1:51:04 – Emi Rowan [Osaka]

naughty cat I like

1:51:10 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

Yes, good point: teachers need to like the poem

1:51:26 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

Enthusiasm permeates the entire reading and lesson

1:51:32 – Virginia [Jatai]

yeah

1:51:58 – Nina Liakos [near Washington DC]

It’s the same with Jazz Chants (Carolyn Graham)–if the teacher is not totally on board, the students won’t be either.

1:52:04 – Barbara Sakamoto [Japan]

clever!

1:52:19 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

Many ideas are popping in my brain now!

1:52:48 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

And punctuation as well.

1:53:42 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

Indeed, Wallace.

1:53:43 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

1:53:57 – Emi Rowan [Osaka]

1:54:35 – Vâia Rodrigues [Brasíia] #2

Nice ideas.

1:54:40 – Nina Ridd [Brasilia]

Lovely… if we feel they are getting inspired, in the end can we lead them into creative writing?

1:54:41 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

I couldn’t agree more with you, Carla.

1:55:05 – Peggy George [Phoenix AZ]

there is a great online tool that simulates refrigerator magnets– http://www.piclits.com Create poetry with images using drag and drop or free writing.

1:55:06 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

yes, Nina. that would be great.

1:55:06 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

We should have sessions like these on a weekly basis.

1:55:22 – Nina Ridd [Brasilia]

group creative writing

1:55:30 – Vinicius Lemos [Brasilia]

Wallace , definitely!

1:55:36 – Carla Arena [Brasilia]

1:55:38 – Barbara Sakamoto [Japan]

1:55:44 – Wallace Barboza [Gama – DF, Brazil]

1:56:11 – Stella Maris Saubidet [Longchamps. Argentins]

I’ll use it with my teens, “forever beginners” at school, ha, ha

1:56:21 – Gilmar Mattos [Franca-SP-Brazil]

As they say “sharing is caring”

1:56:23 – Nina Ridd [Brasilia]

we will notice if they are motivated because they start producing orally their bits of sentences, sounds…

1:56:39 – Roseli Serra [Recife]

Yes, it coould be creative writing asking Ss to write poems form ONe word for ex, starting with the first letter of the worrd and so on. Ex Write  a poem starting with each letter of the word ELEPHANT.  I tried it and it worked very well!
